  At 4.5 he writes most of his letters wrong but I let it go, he will either figure it out of write this way forever but me trying to correct him resulted in him saying he will never write "e" again, ever!

  There are two styles of writing - zaner-blozer (ball and stick) and D'nealian. D'nealian has loops in the letters, it is a cursive-style writing and definitely not a new style. Depends on the school or district as to what style they teach.

  My daughter writes her o's the exact same way.  Starting at the bottom and going clockwise.  I've always thought it was weird, but didn't think much of it besides that.  She does pretty well at the rest of her letters.
