Food Allergy

What do you guys do about birthday cakes?

DS is peanut allergic and, although we don't think he's allergic to at least some tree nuts, we avoid those too.  For his birthday we've generally just bought the premade grocery store cakes as long as there is no warning.  It's worked fine so far but I really want him to have a nice cake where he gets to decide what he wants on it.  How have you been handling this?

Re: What do you guys do about birthday cakes?

  • I have a good friend who is a baker, so she is able to make one dairy/egg/peanut free for me.  I would think that most commercial bakeries couldn't guarantee no nut exposure.  I'd look into finding a private person to do it.

  • Just a lurker but my sister (private baker) usually makes the cakes since she does it on the side anyway and my nephews have severe allergies. For our last party, she was pregnant and didn't feel like it, so I ordered from an allergen-friendly bakery in a local town.

Look around/call around and see if you can find something like that if you can't make it yourself!

I baked DS this cake...I made him a big cupcake and a two layer cake on the bottom with a baby mickey mouse theme.  Not sure if you wanted to buy or bake....it tastes ok (not like the real thing though)

  • I too have a friend that makes cakes.  I would either find someone private or an allergen free bakery.

  • My DS's only allergy is dairy, so I've modified my grandmother's brown sugar-sour cream cake recipe to be dairy free. I use tofutti sour cream and a mix of fleishmann's sticks/crisco instead of butter. For the frosting I sub cocunut milk for whole milk and again the fleishmann's/crisco combo with cocoa powder and brown sugar...it's almost as good as the real thing and way better than cake from a box!

  • we use a local vegan bakery and it is sooooo good!
  • If you have a vegan bakery around that would probably be your best bet.  Otherwise- if you don't want to DIY it- check with some smaller/locally owned bakeries instead of the big grocery store ones.  you'll probably find someone that is willing to work with you and may even know about allergy precautions already.

We used Cherry Brook Kitchens Yellow Cake and the Dairy/Soy Free icing... LO tore it up! The ice is hard to work with though...it's very sticky!

  • I've been learning how to decorate cakes so I can make cute ones myself.  I really like the book Hello Cupcake because they have cute ideas that are pretty easy to make.  I think cupcakes are easier than a big cake and they're easier to bring to other kids' parties too (so DD has something when everyone else eats cake).

  • I make all of our cakes now. Food Allergy Mama's cookbook is my bible! Then I buy cake toppers online. I've done Transformers, Scooby Do,etc.

I found a new vegan bakery that opened up near us. Every commercial bakery we checked could not promise that there would not be cross contamination, and I didn't want to take chances. So, it is either the vegan bakery, or I am making it myself.

Like pp, I just found a local bakery. I had them do a regular cake for everyone else, and a dairy-free smash cake for DD"s 1st birthday. This year I think I am going to do a variety of cupcakes. The Duncan Hines mix and frosting are dairy-free, and one of my chef friends sent me a copy of Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World.

She said some of her vegan clients swear by it. I haven't used it yet, but the recipes sound delicious!!

My husband bakes all of our family's birthday cakes now.
  • I haven't had a birthday cake in years, but this year I'm getting one from our allergen free bakery (discovered just after my last birthday).  My H already asked what kind I wanted.  Definitely see if you can find an allergy friendly or vegan bakery around.
