Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Can prepared formula be mixed w/BM and stored?

My LO is 9 months old today :)  She's only had mommy's milk until today.  I've had a lot of trouble with my supply for the last month and completely wiped out my freezer stash :(  Formula is foreign to me...please help!

1) Can I mix prepared formula (with water) to BM and refrigerate it until used?

2) Does it matter if the milk and formula temperatures are different when mixing the two?

3) What bottles do you recommend?  I've only used Playtex drop-ins until now.

TIA :)

Re: Can prepared formula be mixed w/BM and stored?

  • I have mixed formula with breast milk before.  When DS first came home from the nicu we fortified the breastmilk by adding neosure formula to it to add extra calories.  I had to mix it up in a batch to get the ratio correct.  I am pretty sure it was good in the fridge mixed for 24 hours.

I use Dr. Browns bottles they were recommended to me in the nicu because they help with the gas the babies get in their tummies and they had preemie sized nipples for us to use in the beginning.

Way to go for getting to 9 months with exclusive breastmilk!! Great job!!

  • I mixed ready-to-feed and BM when we transitioned at 6 mos. No issues here and it kept her getting BM a little longer.

I use Tommee Tippee bottles because we introduced the bottle early with pumped milk and I liked the way she latched with the TT bottles. It made for easy back and forth.

    Congrats on getting this far!

  • Just remember that formula is only good for about 24-48 once opened (RTF) or mixed (powder).  Check your labels. Once baby starts drinking a bottle of formula, you need to dump what isn't eaten in an hour.
  • can i jump in and ask a followup question?  i'm in the same boat as OP and am also going to try to start supplementing.  yesterday i sent the first half and half bottle to daycare and he wanted no part of it.  i just used some formula that was given as a sample to us at the hospital, i think it's enfamil for gas and fussiness.  are there formulas that taste better than others that maybe i should try?  we sent another bottle again today of the same mix, hoping we'll just have better luck.

We got lucky and DD liked the first kind we tried, but a lot of moms try multiple brands/types before they find the one LO likes.

  • Oh, and I'd call your pedi, too. There's a possibility they would say start transitioning to real milk since you're past 10 mos.
