S/O Balancing Families

I have to share this bit of crazy:

DH?s cousin got married this weekend and is now settled in Portland near his wife?s (large, VERY tight-knit) family.  His MIL extended an invitation to his mom for Thanksgiving this year.  Now DH?s aunt is telling us we?ll have to alternate years between Seattle and Vancouver for Thanksgiving.  Uh, excuse me?  While I?m sure DH, DS, and I would be welcome on occasion, the invitation wasn?t to us and why on this green earth does my family need to go to my husband?s cousin?s in-law?s every other year?

What about my parents? My sister?  DH?s mom?

I shot that insanity down immediately.

Re: S/O Balancing Families

  • We are having a HUGE problem deciding how to split up holidays between family, so I feel your pain! Everyone seems to have a limb and are all pulling in different directions!

My mom, grandparents, and aunts/uncles/cousins live 750 miles away.

My brother is in Korea, and my sister lives about 325 miles away.

MIL lives three blocks away. *facepalm*

I want to spend Thanksgiving here, as it is not too big in my family (aunts/uncles go visit the other side of their families). We all do Christmas pretty big, and all the family comes, so I want to go to my moms for that. MIL wants us to basically do ALL holidays here. NOT HAPPENING.

My family gets to be apart of my babies life too!

  • Can you imagine just all showing up Thanksgiving day!  Um, what, didn't you realize that apparently you invited everyone to come over, new family?  Oops!

  • Good Lord.  Things like this make me happy that everyone in my family lives so far away...

DH's entire family lives within spitting distance of each other except for DH and one of his cousins.  And every event that happens is a crazy gigantic extended family nightmare.  They're all nice enough, but it's just too much all the time.  Too many people.  Too many compromises trying to deal with everyone's schedules and kids and food and whatever...
