Macrosomia (baby over 90th percentile): anyone else?

I believe I've seen at least a couple other ladies here whose babies are suspected to have macrosomia (measure over 90th percentile).  My (not so) little guy is measuring in the 96th, estimated at 8lbs 4oz at 36w.  My OB is driving me nuts regarding a birth plan, she has changed her mind multiple times regarding how we can proceed and what my options are for delivery (induction vs. c-section, at what point in time, etc).  She is frustrating me so much I am almost to the point of wanting to find a new doctor, although I know that will be next to impossible this far along.  So for you other ladies measuring over the 90th, what are your delivery plans at this point?  What options did your OB give you?

I'm not in that situation (yet... I didn't have a growth scan), but, FWIW I was a 10lb10oz baby and have sisters that were 10lb and 9lb14oz- all three were c-section and my mom's recovery was fine, all three of us grew into normal, healthy adults

My older sister (10lber) was breach and VBAC wasn't really a thing in those days, so I was a scheduled c-sec but then broke the water before the scheduled day, so I wound up coming on my own schedule.  My younger sister (9.14) was scheduled early becuase I'd been SO big, and had no complications despite the early arrival.

Good luck with your decision, sorry to hear your doctor isn't leaving you feeling very confident.  Maybe get a second opinion at the hospital or within the practice?

  • We had an US at around 30 weeks and his head and belly were measuring 95th percentile. And his weight was a little on the higher side (they aren't always accurate so we aren't going on that too much). Because it is impossible usually to tell if baby will fit through the pelvis until you try, we aren't scheduling a c-section. She told me to know what it involves and be ready mentally should it come to that in labor but we will try to avoid it. I have another US at around 36 weeks to see what he is at so we have a better idea of what to expect. We will probably be doing a membrane sweep at around 38 weeks. She would like to try and not have me go over just because of his size so we can prevent a c-section.

  • We're just under that, in the 89%.  This was at 32 weeks.  I have another growth scan next week.  My doc mentioned that if he continues to be this large she'd like to talk induction a week early and to not rule out the possibility of needing a c-section.  Seeing that my DS was born a week early on his own and weighed 8 lbs 2oz I'm not really worried about either of these.  I'm pretty confident that this DS will come around at least a week early and weigh in the mid-high 8's.

  • First off, I'm sorry that your OB seems to be indecisive about how to go about delivering your LO. I can see how frustrating it is to know your LO is measuring too big and not really know what to do about it.

I have GD, so I was somewhat expecting a larger baby, but I have been good with my blood sugars and didn't expect him to be as large as he was at the growth u/s. At 36 weeks he was weighing in at 8 lbs 8 oz, his head and arms were measuring  38 weeks and his torso/belly were measuring 42 weeks (which is typical of GD babies).

With how he was measuring my OB's main concern was that even if we tried to induce early he would get stuck around the torso coming out and could cause neurological damage. So now I'm scheduled for a c-section at 39 weeks (June 27th).

What is important is doing what your a comfortable with. If your doctor is saying you have options then you need to decide what option you are okay with. Are you okay with the possibility of an emergency c-section if an early induction doesn't pan out? Or would you rather just have the c-section at 39 weeks?

I hope you pick something that makes you happy.

  • Just be glad they measured you and are giving you options. They didn't me. Im not a big person. 5'3''. 140lbs. My first was 9lbs 6ozs. And I did it naturally. Ouch?!

This is my OB's concern as well, my guy is also measuring larger in the abdomen.  First she told me we could induce at 39w, then she told me that we had to do a c/s because that's what the MFM recommended.  Today she called me and said she discussed my case with the other OB in the practice and they can offer me a trial of labor, induction at 39w if he doesn't come sooner.  I am glad they are giving me this option, as I wanted to go naturally and the thought of a c-section terrifies me, even though I know it's safe.

Now I am just praying I go into labor on my own before 39w, as I'd prefer to avoid both the induction and the c-section if possible!

Thanks for all your replies ladies!

  • I have a growth u/s next Monday to check on her size. My midwives suspect she is very big. I'm consistently measuring 3 weeks ahead and am truly "all belly". Even as a midwife, she brought up the words induction and/or c-section. I take that to mean LO must be a chunker! Their hope is that I go into labor naturally within the next week or two so they don't have to intervene.

My delivery plans at this point are flexible...but I really would like to avoid a c-section at all costs-even if it means being induced. Still hoping to go med free as well, naive as that may sound. Tongue Tied
