CDers: what's the minimum?

I'm thinking about trying CD'ing part time.  DD is in daycare 4 days a week and home the other 3 days so I'm thinking about trying CD'ing on those 3 days she isn't at daycare.  She is 4 1/2 months old.  What is the minimum for how many cloth diapers I should get.  Also, if you don't mind, please make your specific suggestions for what you like best.  I'm clueless.

TIA!

  • Some day cares will do CD for you, just thought I would throw that out there.

I use GroVia and I love them!!! They just came out with new soaker pads that are 90% softer then the old ones. Everyone is different to what they like. I have gotten free stuffers and I hate that kind. I use them since they were free though. I would say starting off with 1 or 2 of a few different kinds. There are starter kits so those are good to get. My friend is a cdering and so I just asked her what she used because there is so many choices i was overwhelmed.  I love my GroVias though because they are one size. I use the biosoaker pads too.

Kellyscloset.com is where I get my stuff, they also have a blog

  • I have BumGenius 4.0s with snaps. I bought 24 and I usually do laundry every other day, though I can make it three days.

I love our BGs, though I liked the prefolds and covers we used when DS was a newborn.

  • Ok, so if I bought Grovias or BumGenius, it comes with everything I need?  Or do I buy inserts?  Clueless... talk to me slowly Smile

  • I use Flips during the day and Fuzzibunz at night, love both. Of the Flips I bought 6 covers with 18 stay-dry inserts, plus 4 organic inserts. I have 6 Fuzzibunz (w/pocket inserts).

I wash every other day but I've never gotten down to the wire. I could probably go two or three full days before needing to wash.

It really depends on what you're looking for. I love the Flip system because I can just change out the insert when she pees and there's much less washing/drying to do, they're also pretty easy to use when you're out of the house or have someone else watching LO (My 13-year old brother babysits LO from time to time and has no problems using the system)

Also, you want to do a personal count of how many times  a day you have to change LO's diaper in the 'sposies and add a couple times to that: I try to change her more often when she's wearing cloth just because it doesn't soak up exactly the same (though I will add that we haven't had a blow-out since I started using them---it used to be a daily occurrence)

    Good luck!

  • We have 26 CDs that last us about 4 days if I don't do laundry. How many diapers does your LO go through per day? I'd do that many multiplied by 3 and then you'd only have to do laundry at the end of the three days. If you don't mind doing laundry every day, you could get away with maybe 10 - 12.

We use the BumGenius 4.0 and love them. I've never tried anything else, though.

  • I like using WAHM A12's-water proof covers with snap in inserts or thristies covers with pre folds(cause you just take out the wet pre fold ,wipe down the cover, insert new pre fold)- wash covers every couple days depending on the situation....I use 24-36 pre folds and have couple A12's or fitteds(trying to build up that supplie.....pre folds are cheaper) I wash about every other day or so
  • Money wise I do prefolds part time, but H won't usually do them because he thinks its hard.  All we do is put the prefold (folded lol) into the shell and snap it on.  We don't have fleece liners yet to keep DD happy while they're on, so when she pees, we know it.  They're not hard to use, but for some reason they look ridiculous to me because I don't think I've got the right size prefold.. oi

Im going to pick up some AIO (all in ones) because they're so similar to disposables in my eyes that I know H would help out.  I was really interested in pockets for a while, too, but we'll see if I get some or not.

BTW this is an addicting thing...I constantly look at diapers lol

  • Econobum and Bumgenius are good for the disposable inserts- not pocket, just lay the cotton biodegradable insert in the diaper and flip it out when you change. Wipe down the plastic lined inside, lay down another cotton insert, and resnap on. Super easy. I have some of these for when we're out and about and they;re great.

I love my one size Fuzzibunz because the sized ones (small, medium, etc)  only fit for so long, whereas the one size (OS) fit from newborn til 22lbs- which is pretty much a year or more. You do have to buy microfiber or hemp inserts, and if I were you I'd buy cotton washable soakers to extend the time the diaper is on your kid.

    I LOVE my CD's.

  • We do prefolds and I like to keep laundry to an every-other-day affair, so at 4 months I like to have 2-3 covers per day, and go through 6-9 prefolds per day.

I have GroVia AIOs because of rec's I've read all over the place but haven't broken them in yet. (If you fo GroVia see if you can find GroBaby anywhere- I cleaned up on a sale because they rebranded- same stuff, diff logo!)
