I need spit up help

Hannah never had much trouble with spit up when she was younger. Within the past few weeks, she's started spitting up a lot more often. Sometimes right after eating when she's being burped, sometimes hours later. And it's varying textures: mucousy/milky, cheese-curdish, and sometimes almost like pure water and it's probably a tablespoon's worth of whatever it is each time. Is this normal to increase the amount/frequency of spit up at 5 months? She isn't on solids yet, fwiw.

In addition, she has also been doing this grunting thing more often - think like the grunting they do when they are trying to poop and magnify it. Red face, the works. I don't think it's constipation because she even does it when she's just pooped. She had done this before probably a month ago, but then it went away for a while.

I don't know if it's all related (reflux? gas?) or just two incredibly annoying typical baby things rearing their heads at the same time. Her 6 mo appt is in about a week so I plan to ask then, but I just wanted some input from btdt moms.

Re: I need spit up help

  • Is she starting to sit up on her own at all? Some babies have more issues with spitting up when they start to sit up because they aren't used to using those abdominal muscles and it causes a bit of reflux. Some babies start spitting up more when they start crawling, too.

Warner was a little different because he spit up a ton from day one, but when he started trying to sit up it really peaked.

No idea about the grunting :-( Good luck!

  • Is she teething?  DD2 has never really spit up, but we had a day where she projectile spit up 2 or 3 times (a lot), but it seemed to be because she had massive quantities of drool.  The spitting up didn't bother her.

This is what I would say, too.  As a newborn DD would spit up a normal amount.  Then she pretty much stopped from about 3.5-4.5 months.  It was great!  Then around 5 months she started up full force again.  But, it coincided with her doing crunches constantly and starting to spend a good portion of her day (and night) on her tummy.  She's still spitting up a lot, and it tends to come out when she's sitting up (her new skill) or doing a lot of crunches while on the floor or in her bouncer.
