Milk strike?! Advise please

Hey ladies,

A is our awesome eater.  M usually eats well, leaving an oz or 2 every now and then, but since I serve them 7 oz/bottle, no big deal.  Now, it is a struggle for him to eat 3 oz/bottle!  It takes almost an hr to feed him and very little at that.  He eats his solids (cereal with fruit in AM and veggie and fruit in PM) very well, and occasionally wants more.  Pedi said that at this age, milk is still more important.  How can I get him to drink more milk?!

We still do dreamfeed (feed while asleep @ 10pm) and he'll usually finish that bottle, but waiting for him to fall asleep for every bottle will totally throw off our feeding schedule with A (we feed both at same time, or at least w/in 30 min of each other).

THANKS!

Hi Jackie! First of all, your boys are adorable!!!! :-)

I had a similar issue with Ethan somewhere b/n 8-9 months just a few weeks after starting solids. I attributed less milk to trying to build up some space for solids later. lol  I'm still BFing so him drinking less would imply making less milk and I knew that milk should still be his #1 source of nutrition. And what I did may be frowned upon...but it worked! If he didn't drink his milk well, I cut off the following solids meal. Yup, I just said no baby food for you! He ended up getting hungry at about 2-3 hours, and I gave him breastmilk. If he ate well, then I would give him solids about 30minutes to 1 hour after the milk feeding. After about 1 week of this, it worked. He now drink his milk every 4 hours well, eats solids about 1 hour after each milk feeding (3 solid meals). Maybe it's just a phase and you may want to just observe and play it by ear, but I was I guess a little more aggressive. lol

  • They have been eating solids for a few months, so I don't think he's getting more full or anything.  He usually meets his min 15 oz but I hate that he's eating less than A... and A is already 2 lbs heavier (and really a size difference).

  • could mikey be teething?

evan has been leaving milk in his bottle lately or not really taking it...he is cutting a tooth though and is pretty cranky and miserable. i remember mady did this to me too every time she cut a new tooth.

  • Not sure if you have tried:

    a) upping the nipple size. Not sure what # they are at but some kids prefer a faster flow.

    b) giving the bottle when they are really hungry - which means before the solids. That is how we have to feed Izzy.

If you have then it may be a phase, he may be teething or not feeling too well. Give it a few days and see what happens. Isabelle never went more than a couple of days of leaving an ounce or more in her bottles and if she did a lot of time the above two were the culprits. Once she felt more herself she went right back to sucking it all down.

    Good luck!

  • Eve - Teething is a possibility.  I don't see any, but he's been messing with his mouth lately, and drooling  a lot.

Mel - We've tried larger nipples, but he just starts gasping for air (we are more careful when increasing size).  As for waiting until hungry and trying bottle, we've done that too!  But we can't wait too long  either bc then throws off the damn schedule.

Thanks!  Hopefully being at the beach opens his appetite.

  • Love your new siggy pic!! I'm in the SAME situation as you! Brayden was drinking 6oz of formula every 3-4 hours (about 30oz total). Since starting solids, he's down to prob 15oz. He did have an ear infection and the pedi attributited it to that (he said sucking would make his ears hurt)...but that should have resolved (although now I think it's in the other ear)...I go back tomorrow, so I'm going to ask him. It's driving me crazy! He even lost 1/2 lb in 2 weeks :(
