NBR: clicky poll: bedroom furniture

We are moving into a bigger bedroom in our new house which means I actually get a dresser - but my actual bedroom set is discontinued, we have espresso stained bed and two nightstands, blues and whites for bedding colors... would you:[Poll]

Re: NBR: clicky poll: bedroom furniture

  • I voted other... does your new house have white trim? If yes, then I think white would look good, but also I think a color would be good... either choose one of the accent colors off your bedding or get a dresser the color you like and get bedding with accent colors to match! :)

  • Agreed. I don't like matchy matchy furniture though....I have darker furniture and some oak with darker distressing in my bedroom and I think it looks good. OR I'd go with something that would color compliment the walls...like if the walls were earth toned I'd go a nice turquoise or dark red...or if they were darker or colored, a white piece. Hunt Craigslist for the perfect piece and go to town with paint. But yeah, nothing in my house matches, not even my dishes....

This is what I was kind of wondering if it would look good. Get a CL dresser and paint it, like maybe navy blue or turquoise.

I LOVE refinishing dressers! Easy and makes a huge difference! I'd vote for turquoise! :)

This was my first thought.  That something painted a blue color to match your bedding would look cool.  But what about if you change your bedding?  That was my only hesitation with that.

  • I like furniture to match, at least style and wood wise. It doesn't have to be from the same set, but I do like it to have the same feel to it.  That's just me.

So - if I were in your shoes, I'd find out what wood your bedroom set is, take it to a solid wood shop and see what they've got and what they can do custom.

We just did this in order to get a book case for W's room.  We're using an oak set that my step daughter grew up with.  We knew it was a warm cherry finish.  The furniture shop is custom making a book case to match and it actually wasn't all that expensive once we'd made the decision to not just buy something Ikea/Targetish.

Any advice/tutorials on how to do this? I've never refinished something before. Do you have to sand and what paint would you use?
