Anyone have three kids and a minivan?

I'm trying to figure out what to do about seating/carseats for when #3 arrives.  We have 8 passenger seating (the 8th seat is a moveable and sits in the middle of the two captain's chairs in the middle row).  I think I'd like to have them all in the middle row if possible but I'm not sure of the best/easiest arrangement with the seating.

In August I'll have a newborn, a 2 year old and a 4 3/4 yr old.

I put my oldest son in the back seat and my newborn and 2 year old in the captains seats.  I have stow and go, so sometimes I would stow the second captains seat and put both boys in the back, it was just easier to climb in the back and buckle them

I don't think I would ever put all 3 in one row together.  One would always be touching the other and would make any car ride hell.  But that's just my kids.

This.  We are going to stow the second captain seat and put the two older boys in the back.

  • I will have three kids in a minivan with 3 seats in the middle row.

    They will seat #2 #1 #3

I chose to keep my oldest in the middle because she can easily sit in her carseat and help with buckling... my younger daughter requires more help. And the baby on the other side because I don't want to be taking the bucket seat out over a car seat.

I feel like having my oldest next to the baby will be a big help.. she already helps me by giving stuff to her sister (sippy cups, snacks, etc) so I'm expecting the same again.

It will also allow me to have the whole back for strollers, dog, shopping etc...

Oh and I recently put them right next to each other so they can start getting used to it.

  • We put our two older boys in the back (they were 2 and 4 when the baby was born) and put the newborn in the captains chair on the passenger side. It still works great, as my olders are close enough to share games/books/snacks that I put in the middle between their seats, but not close enough to bother each other. And the baby is rear-facing and is entertained by his brothers.

  • My almost 6 year old is in a booster in the back.  My almost 4 year old is a FF convertible behind the driver in a captain's chair.  My 17 mo old is in a RF convertible behind the passenger in a captain's chair.   I also have  the  second row middle seat removed.

eta:  these are the only 3 places iwth latch also.

This is our exact set up and our exact reasoning. I love hearing the baby laughing at her brothers b/c she can see them doing funny faces.

  • I don't have a minivan (an Acadia though, similar seating arrangement).  I have DS #1 in the middle back, and DS #2 and DD are in the captain's chairs.  These are the only 3 spots in the car that have the tether option, so they have to go there anyway.  I would not ever want all 3 side by side though, they would totally bug each other and I don't want to have to worry that they are touching the baby and waking up her up, etc.  I may eventually move both boys to the far back together, but it would have to be when they are both in boosters that don't have to be tethered.

  • I don't, but my friend does and they have a Sienna. This is how they do it:

1 year old goes in the middle row captains chair directly behind the driver. Their almost 3 year old goes in the very back row along with her 6 year old sister.

And they have the passenger-side captains chair folded in the Stow-n-Go. So, when you open the passenger-side sliding door, there's a lot of room for the kids to get in and out.

I'm not crazy, I've just been a very bad mood for the last 40 years!
