Is this term used for someone that after tests comes back normal? How does an RE treat this then? Im asking because I had a pelvic and trans-vaginal sonogram and they came back normal. We are to keep trying through August than we will be referred based on our ages - 37/40.
Re: "Unexplained Infertility?"
I have friends who use this term. Both of them were tested and fell in the "normal" ranges, although like his sperm count was at the lower end and so on. They tried various interventions, and unfortunately didn't have any luck. The doctor said, basically, there's no concrete reason they aren't conceiving.
Hope someone else has better information for you!
We didn't meet the RE yet and my husband hasnt been tested. I guess we need further tests?
That is our technical diagnosis. My husbands sperm is normal, but at the low end of the range for viscosity and rate. It's very important that your husband have a sperm analysis so determine if there are any issues there. Your RE will order up the tests after you meet with him. What have you done so far? How long have you been trying? Are you temping or using OPKs?
There are plenty of women on the Pregnant over 35 board who got pregnant with no assistance, or even had a surprise pregnancy. So it does happen at our age. Unfortunately, many of the women on this board are going through IF treatments or have been trying for a long time, so there is a lot of IF talk. But any and all questions are welcome, in fact it would be a nice break!
OPKs will definitely help, especially if you feel that your environmental temperature fluctuates. However being that you take it first thing before getting up in the morning, it *should* be relatively consistent.
Best of luck and let us know if you have any questions.
We have unexplained infertility. All of our tests have been normal (normal AMH, normal ultrasound, normal HSG, normal SA), I ovulate regularaly, I have regular cycles. My thyroid is normal, my prolactin level is normal. But we've been trying almost 2 years now and nada.
Since most people will get pregnant after 12 months of trying, if you don't you get the "unexplained" diagnosis (6 months of trying if you are over 35). The typical treatment is ovarian stimulation (with Clomid, Femara or injectable meds) to get a few extra follicles each month and IUI to bypass the cervix. Some people (us for instance) will decide to move on to IVF if that doesn't work.
It's a very frustrating diagnosis, because clearly something is wrong. It shouldn't take 2 years to get pregnant when everything is working as it should. The tests we have to look for problems though can't find everything. It's probably a combination of a lot of small problems--my age, low normal sperm parameters, maybe a fertilization problem, maybe a problem with implantation. We may never know, we just hope one of these treatments works for us.

This. MH and I are unexplained as our test results came out "normal"; we chose to not pursue ART and conceived on our own after >3 yrs of trying( and I think the uterine biopsy I had done shortly before getting pregnant had something to do with it). If we had pursued ART, we would have started with medicated IUI and then moved on to IVF per the RE we saw at the time. If your husband hasn't been tested, then he definitely needs to do an SA before you're given and unexplained IF diagnosis.
