How to get a good side lying latch?

Can anyone walk me through this? I like to nurse sidelying but she always has a bad latch. Even with my milk in I am a B cup, do you think I'm just too small to get it right?

  • I found it to be easier once LO got a little bit older (and bigger).  We just really started being able to do it comfortably within the last couple of week.

  • I am only a B and side nurse so you can totally do it.  You need them a lot lower down your body than you think.  baby on their side right up against you.  My nipple is usually at right about between his eyes/bridge of his nose. you lay on your side with the arm you are laying on under your head. Then i have to use my other arm to get him on and hold his body close to me on its side.

This definitely. It wasn't until about 2 months that we got the hang of this, and now (esp with her being SO distractible) it's our preferred way to nurse :)

Yep, we couldn't do it until he was a little older, probably 3-4 months? He won't lie still long enough to do it now, haha.

I propped his head up on my bicep and laid him on his side, tummy to tummy. It took a while to get it down and there was a lot of milk sprayed, haha.

  • I usually lay him flat first, then hold the boob from above and get him to latch. Then I roll him on his side and lay down.

  • We couldn't get a good latch side lying until probably 3-4 months old. I don't think size really matters.  I think it's LO's strength.

  • Try using two pillows under your head so you can see better, and one behind you as you lie on your side. The way you're lying has a lot to do with how well you're be able to relax once you get a good latch.

Definitely scoot baby WAY down so that your nipple is closer to his eyes - their little heads need to reach up pretty high to get the right latch side-lying.

If you're on your left side, for example, put your left arm under your head. For really wiggly babies, I'd suggest using your upper arm to hold their head still a little bit, if you need to. It's definitely an art form, but once you get it a couple times, you'll get used to pushing their little bodies into the right position for a quick latch.

OH, one thing I've done for all off my babies is this: I usually push their hand and forearm under my side to keep them still. . Not the one on top, as that's obviously not going to work, but the one that they're lying on. I always roll over onto the bottom arm to hold them in place and keep them from wiggling away. The mattress is soft enough that it just pins it very gently, but keeping it from wiggling around really helps. (Note - I'm NOT telling anyone to lie on their baby. Just a hand!)

  • We've been nursing side-lying from the day LO was born--mostly because my rear hurt so bad that the cradle positions were really uncomfortable. I'm also small chested (finally a B with my milk in!).

I agree with what everyone says about putting the baby lower than you think. Baby needs to reach the head way up to get it right. The LC at the hospital also gave me these tips:

---You want your body in kind of a V shape, butt pushed back as opposed to just lying in a straight line.

--Pull LO really close to your body

--Rather than pull your boob around, move the tilt of your shoulders so the boob is at the right angle

--Use 2 pillows under your head

    HTH!
