Help-going to start visiting schools..what should I ask?

We haven't decided if we want to start DD in a daycare/school environment yet, but I made our first appointment for this Friday to visit a Montessori school.

I am so excited and scared about this whole new stage!! Last night DD had a friend (9yrs old )over and when they had to leave they said they had to go because they had to get ready for school tomorrow. DD started saying that she too wanted to go to school and then cried when I told her she was too young still. I did tell her we would visit one on Friday and she got sooooooooo excited!! Yeah, she probably won't feel that way when she really has to go to school lol

What are some of the questions I should have ready when checking out schools? Any tips or guidance for this very scared mommy?

  • i was researching preschool info a few months ago and i googled preschool questions and you will get a list of them.

there are lots!! you think of more after each visit.

    Good luck

Thanks!  I am hoping to get some of thsse here! Is that cheating? lol

  • FWIW, DD loves 'school', at this age just MDO but a full day.

I would consider what types of learning you are aiming for - does DD need lots of social skills learning, like being with other kids, standing in line, being part of a herd, or does she need more fact based learning.

What is the school illness policy?  Are you looking for an environment where no one freaks out over a runny nose, and you won't mind DD getting exposed to some germs, or one where kids are sent home at the first sneeze?

Does DD need structure, or is she better with a free play based environment?

  • Hmm, I probably chose mine for the wrong reason... I liked the building it is in!

But we do have friends who have their children there and my pediatrician also said she has heard lots of good things about it.

I don't know much about different teaching styles, I just wanted to begin to get him socialized because he can't start kindergarten until he is 6, because he misses the cut off date by one stinkin day.

I told him last week that he'd be going to preschool soon and he was so disappointed because he wants to go to kindergarten! He must have seen a show about kindergarten.
