I am grateful that DS is such a good eater of table food, but a few people have told me that DS may be eating too much- is that possible at this age? Should I be limiting his food intake?
Example- My sister is watching him this summer & she has 2 kids ages 2 & 4. She made them silver dollar pancakes for breakfast along with apple slices and strawberries. Her 2 year old ate 3 pancakes, 1 strawberry, no apples; 4 year old ate 2 pancakes, 4 apples slices, and 1 strawberry; DS ate 6 pancakes, no apples, 2 strawberries. (The reason I know the exact amount of all kids is b/c she told me to compare how much more he eats then her kids)
6 pancakes??? I would have given him more fruit, less pancakes- which I told her this... Now, he doesn't snack much if at all during the day- he typically just eats his 3 meals a day. I know babies can eat more sometimes during growth spurts, but he eats like this on a regular basis. He doesn't have rolls, and he usually is under 50% for weight.
WDYT- Is there such a thing as too much food at this age?
Re: Food- How much is too much?
I'd tend to agree that 6 pancakes is too much. I'd ask her to stress the fruits and veggies more.
No, I don't think that they can eat too much at this age-- actually, my pedi agrees, but I think that they can eat the wrong things and that the lessons we teach them now about good food will stick with them for the rest of their lives.
I don't think they can eat too much at this age, although like you said - I would have encouraged more fruit.
FWIW, my older son "ate like a pig" for about the first 3 years of his life, and has always been around 25-50% on his weight. He has finally slowed down and doesn't eat quite so much anymore. And one kid is always going to eat more than another kid. It's silly to compare.

how much is too much? when he barfs
::writes down barfing=stop feeding::
lol, how are you facey?! How was Hilton Head?! I went back to Disney this past weekend- last minute trip- crazy, but fun...
I agree. I think 6 pancakes is a lot, I would have pushed more fruit, too, but at the same time, if he didn't want the fruit and he wanted the pancakes, I would have given them to him (and just left the fruit on his tray). If he eats like this all the time and he's 50%tile for weight, he obviously has a high metabolism and likely needs the extra calories.
Also, for pancakes, we put sweet potatoes or something (pureed) in the batter to help make them healthier. For morning we do some cinnamon and banana puree as well as banana slices in the batter, it makes them heavier and more filling for him as well as more nutrient dense.
I don't think it's too much. Not all babies/kids eat the same ammount.
DD eats a ton of certain things, depending on if she likes something she will eat more. She ate a really good size portion (for her age) of stir fry last night, and almost an entire orange. This morning she ate a whole banana and a hand full of baby veggie cheetos.
i send you a pm when i get home
LOL, this was my thought.
Honestly, you said they were silver dollar pancakes, I don't think that is too much. Riley will eat 3 full sized pancakes (which is the serving size for the recipe I make) or 8 mini waffles (which is the serving size listed on the box). But apparently I'm in the minority not thinking pancakes are evil. There's barely any sugar in homemade ones and I usually make them with fruit and oatmeal - without syrup the nutrition facts aren't bad at all.
But yeah, my kid eats full portions of many meals I make and barely maintains her weight curve so I assume it's good.
