When will you potty train

I must admit I am kind of surprised at how many people are trying to potty train. I always thought I wouldn't even think of it till 2 and even then probably not start till 2.5 maybe even 3. So, at what age do you think you will attempt to kick the diapers to the curb?

Re: When will you potty train

  • At the earliest, 2.

At my last family function, my grandmother/uncle were pushing me to start PT my 17 month old. I have no desire to even attempt to do it this young and think it would be a huge fail.

  • If he is ready (seems interested)- around 20 months.  If not then I will do 2yrs old.

  • Whenever DS is ready.  He is starting to show signs of being ready, but we tried to put him on the potty and he freaked out.  So definitely not ready.  But I'm really in no rush because I have friends who just trained their kids and it's a huge pain.  They are constantly running to the bathroom at the most inopportune times and the most inconvenient places, and I'm cool not having to deal with that yet!

Yeah, in a way it is so inconvenient! I nanny twins and have since they were 1 (they're now 5) I potty trained them at 2.5 almost 3 and sometimes I wish they werent. It never fails that they have to go right as I strap all 3 kids into their carseats etc

  • I think DS1 was ready a little after 2, but I had a new baby.  We tried when he was 2.5 and then he regressed.  He was about about 2 months shy of his 3rd birthday when he pee trained and he BM trained right after his 3rd b-day.  I have no expectations with DS2.

  • With my older two, I started at about 18 mo or so.  I will try with Dylan too.  With #1, she would have been PT by 2 if we hadn't moved the month before.  I am hoping she'll be done by next summer.
  • With my 2 older kids we started around 3.  I will probably start around 3 with Ruby, too unless she shows interest sooner.
  • We're starting the 3 DPT next month.

  • My DS is showing signs of being ready so we bought him a potty and are letting him lead when he's ready.
  • When he shows signs of being ready.  DS #2 was not really ready until a few months before his 3rd birthday.  I knew to push it before then was just going to be more of a hassle than it was worth.  When he was absolutely, 100% ready, it was the easiest process ever.  He's been fully potty trained about 3 months now and he's had a total of 1 accident.  Maybe I just got lucky but I really think waiting until he was super ready made it a painless process.

I don't know if DS #2 will be sooner or later than DS #1, but we will take the same approach.

Now that I have a potty trained LO, I honestly don't understand why people are in such a rush to get it done.  Diapers were way easier, especially with a younger LO who needs to be taken out of a cart, put back in a stroller, etc when we are out and DS #1 starts screaming about going pee NOW!!!!

It really is not easier! I completely agree about waiting till DS shows me signs that he is ready. I know from past experience that if I try before he is ready it is just going to make us both miserable and I am not going to lie diapers are not that expensive and I am in no rush for him to be potty trained. When he shows me that he is ready we will go for it and I hope it wont take long at all.

  • dd's not even 2 yet and she's telling us when she has to go potty. needless to say, we've started PT a lil sooner than what we expected (expected to start PT the end of summer, not the beginning).

  • I think PT starts at 2 in daycare... I will not try it before. and I'm thinking she might go back if we get a BFP in the next months..

  • DD started showing interest, so we brought out her potty just last week (she is 20.5 months) to get her used to seeing it. I am in no way going to push her until she is a bit older, but I see no reason not to encourage her. So whenever I use the bathroom (which is a lot at 31 weeks pregnant!) I ask her if she wants to go pee pee on the potty with mommy. Sometimes she does, sometimes she doesn't.

My goal right now would be for her to use her potty once a day so that it becomes a regular thing. I spoke to her daycare and they said they would get a potty for her over the next few weeks. When they do, then I will start getting more serious about potty training.

I agree with this. I also think the "its inconvienant, diapers are easier" attitude is totally ridiculous. I dont parent based on what is easiest for me.

We have a potty for DS, he pees on it before bath and so far thats it.

  • I'm with everyone who's waiting for signs of readiness. DD1 started showing signs when she was 23 months, but I didn't PT her until she was 26 months. I don't have any expectations for DD2, although it would be great if she's out of diapers before we have our next baby!

  • whenever he shows signs of interest. His best friend is already signing poop BEFORE he poops so he has a potty and LO loves to sit on it lol
  • We did 3 day PT in March when Ds was 19 months but then we sent him back to DC and they don't take them to the potty untill they are 2.5 so he had to go in the diaper at DC and used the potty at home.  I'm on summer break now so we are using the potty more we are somewhere hear 50/50 on if he goes to it or goes in the diaper.  He does both pee and poo in the potty but if we are outside he just goes in his diaper.

I don't think anyone myself included is going to have our 5yr old pooping their pants because it is easier. I just know from being a daycare teacher that most kids aren't ready to potty train till 2.5. Not all, but most. I don't expect DS to race towards it he is very much the baby and acts like one.

I agree.  I don't think anyone is advocating allowing a pre-schooler to remain in diapers when they are fully capable of potty training because it's easier.  My child was clearly ready, so I knew it was time to potty train even though I knew it was going to bring a whole bunch of issues when I was out or driving with 2 kids.

I think the point was that many of us are not interested in pushing hard to potty train at an early age and before our child is showing every sign of readiness because having a potty trained child is not actually easier than having a child in diapers (which is a big reason I think many people push so hard so early and before their child is really ready).

  • I probably won't potty train/learn for another 6months - 1yr.  DD will need to be able to climb our stairs quickly and safely before I bother.  Our only bathroom is upstairs and I'm not sticking a potty in the kitchen just so I can push her to learn faster.

I was hoping this summer but DS is showing no signs of readiness and now hates the potty (where he used to sit on it before bath time and go). He wears cloth diapers and could care less if he is soaked and rarely let's me know if he's pooped :( I am guessing at least another 6 months.

  • Won't even start thinking about it until 2, actively try closer to 2.5. I don't see the big rush.

  • DD started saying "poop!" right after she went & then switched to saying it before she would go around 20 months so I got potties to introduce the idea to her when she mentitioned. She was really into sitting on it & 'acting out' the whole thing- sitting, getting TP, pretending to wipe, putting it in the toilet & flushing- but she has never gone on the potty yet & I admittedly get impatient just sitting there forever when I don't think she'll actually go. I do not want to push it esp since her brother shows no interest except once in awhile sitting on it fully clothed & of course taking TP off the role & flushing it, so I will just keep responding when she says 'poop' and put her on it but I don't want to push it yet. I'd love for them to PT at the same time but maybe that isn't realistic. DC starts to do it in the 2 yr old room, which they'll be moved into a few weeks after their bday.
  • We have started, slowly. He is still in diapers when out and about and for bedtime. When we are at home, he either wears training pants or just goes naked(it is very hot here).  He knows when he has to go and will let me know to help him in the bathroom.

It started because we were letting him go naked outside, and we noticed he was "holding" it in because he didn't have a diaper on and was confused as to where to go. We started taking him to the potty when this happened and he seemed to understand from he beginning.

Since he is still under 2, we aren't pushing for full on potty training, but it doesn't seem to confuse him. He knows when he has a diaper on he goes in the diaper and when it is off he has to go in the potty.

  • Whenever he starts showing that he's ready. We have a little potty and he'll go on it sometimes. He also is starting to notice when his diaper is wet. I'm in no hurry.
  • He is so not even thinking about the potty right now.

My other two kids were 2.5.  DD PTed overnight and DS1 took a couple of months. My daycare starts PTing at 2, that's when we will start and prob do cold turkey/3 day method at 2.5 again and roll with it.

  • My first is 3.5yo and we're starting to push a bit.  He's almost there - he just needs a little motivation to poop in the potty.

This is kind of how I feel too. I intend to start somewhere around 2 -- before or after depending on his interest. I don't want to miss the window.
