Breastfeeding

Daycare gave my EBF baby another baby's bottle!

Hi, lurker here with a problem/question!

I received a phone call from DS's daycare today saying they accidently gave him another baby's bottle! She pulled the other baby's chart and found out that it was formula but it wasn't listed what kind.  We are waiting for the other mother to call her back with that information.  Anyway, I'm LIVID! It's been an hour now since he took the bottle and he isn't acting unusual.  Has anything like this happened to any of you lady's? Do you think just one formula bottle will have an effect on my breast fed baby? She said it was 4 oz, and he drank it faster than usual.. He's 10 weeks old today.

ETA- every parent has to have every bottle labeled with their childs name, and each child has their own bin in the fridge that is also labeled with their name. I was so relieved when she told me it was a formula bottle and not someone elses bm!

I would definitely be upset.  Does your daycare mandate that parents label bottles - we have to label with DS's name and contents (formula or BM).  One formula bottle should not hurt him - may experience some gas but should be about it.  I would be more freaked out if they happened to give him someone else's BM than Formula.

I'd be really mad too - and would definitely look into the labeling policies for bottles.  But I think that you are really lucky that it was formula and not someone else's BM!  I'd be way more upset that an accident like that was able to happen than the fact that your LO was given formula.  One bottle of formula shouldn't cause any harm - just lots of understandable frustration!

I would be really upset to but agree with PP that formula would be better than someone else's BM.  SO I'm assuming the other baby got your BM?

  • no, my DS's last bottle was still in the fridge when I picked him up.  I'm hoping the other mother sends her baby with extra milk just incase so he didn't starve today!
  • While I'd also be mad, I guess I don't see what difference it makes as to the kind of formula it was. It's formula! Which is what a lot of people solely feed their babies, really the only thing it could do is make him gassy, other than that, I wouldn't be at all concerned.

  • I *think* you may also notice a change in poo for a little bit, as most formula contains a lot of iron that isn't bioavailable, and FF poo is different than BF poo... but I am not syre since J only had formula for the first 4 days of life, (which is a blur by now!) and never had mixed bottles...

Sucks they weren't more careful!! Any idea how it happened?

  • It's admirable they told you. They could have easily played it off as their own whoops.

  • the director said the label on the other baby's bottle was starting to peel and it may have been hard to read.. a horrible excuse.
  • OMG- this happened to us!! I was LIVID! It was a mixture of BM and formula. DD had never had formula and had a dairy sensitivty AND there's a whole host of medical potentials with another woman's BM. It was a nightmare.

I would call your state licensing board to report it. It is actually a very rare mistake and one they take extremely seriously. I also pulled DD as soon as I could and got her into another center- excuses or not, that was completely unacceptable to us. Everything was very properly labeled and even stored in each child's individual tray in the fridge. I'm so mad even remembering...augh!

The formula should be fine- your LO might have an upset tummy but it is just food so although not ideal, LO's health shouldn't be affected. Be very happy it wasn't BM-- we had to confirm with the other mother that she didn't have HIV or Hepatitis (that she knew of). OY.

  • I think all should be well, but I would be extremely mad if that happened with my little one.  You totally should be livid!

  • I'm sure your LO will be fine, but I'd be beyond livid. I agree with the pp that I would pull my kid and report the facility. That is a pretty major mistake...what if your LO had a food sensitivity or some other medical issue. I'm sure your LO will be just fine, but that kind if mistake just shows a carelessness that I would not be okay with.

  • My LO was on the opposite side of this when we first put him in daycare in November. His BM bottle was given to another kid, and my little man went without. The daycare had called me on my way to pick him up to tell me about the mistake, and wanted to make sure I wasn't on any medications. After that we started labelling our bottles with blue painter's tape to make sure that mistake never happened again. Lucky for whatever kid got my BM I wasn't on anything besides the mini pill, and was off dairy for my kid's reflux.

  • Yet another reason I am glad a family member watches DD, one on one attention and no mix ups like this... I would be weirded out too if it had been another persons BM.

How can they mix this up if they have what sounds like a good system for sorting out the bottles. Also is your DCP so busy that they dont remember that your baby is BF (BM looks VERY different from formula!) that should have been her first clue... She must have really not been paying attention. Makes me wonder what else they are not paying attention to..... like the children.

Sorry this happened to you. Im sure you will be discussing this with them about how unacceptable this is and they need to pay better attention.

  • When I was BFing, daycare did not give DD2 another baby's bottle but they did give her a bottle of formula even though I sent in enough bottles of BM. A new girl was working in the infant room and didn't realize DD had BM bottles. I got called right away and was upset about it, but fortunately DD didn't have any reaction to it.
