Cincinnati Babies

Would you be willing to pay for this?

Some friends of ours are possibly starting a new business venture and when she told the idea to me I couldn't decide how I felt about it and I thought I would see what you all think since we (moms/families) would be the demographic.

So they are thinking of starting a grocery delivery service. You send them your list and they go to your store of choice, purchase everything and deliver it-- you obviously pay for the groceries and a delivery fee.

1. Do you think this is something you would use? Would it be something you would use regularly or just for certain occasions (ex: after having a baby, when you need more than a normal grocery run like for a party, when things are hectic and a spouse is out of town, etc.)?

2. If you would use it, how would the delivery fee play into that? Would there be a certain amount you would be willing to spend on the delivery or an amount that would make it not worthwhile?

As a SAHM I can see the benefit and the use but we are also really cheap and can't afford to hire out for anything (Lord knows I would love a cleaning lady!) but I could see maybe more interest as a working mom who has limited time in the evening to spend with kids or even a SAHM who has multiple kids since I only have 1 its not too horrible to go to the store. Thoughts?

  • I wouldn't pay for that kind of thing, no. I could see it as a boutique service, like for people who just had a baby, or people who are sick, but I couldn't imagine signing up for that as a long-term service.

  • I personally wouldn't use it. But I love to grocery shop... I usually do it on weekends so I get to go alone.. It's peaceful.

I'm pretty sure there's a company that already does this (or did it and went out of business) the people I nannied for in college (um, 15 years ago!) used this service. It was called Pea Pod or something like that. It was great for them as they were very busy with work, etc and it was one less thing to take away from their time with their children.
I think it would depend how much the fee was... I could see the benefit for working parents... But as a SAHM I would consider it a waste.

  • My mom and I both have talked alot about doing something like this.  I myself would not pay for it but I am sure that some people would.  I think it would depend on what area of town you are in and things like that.

One idea we had also was to do like later night things...everyone runs our of smokes and needs more beer and if you don't wanna go out how cool would it be to just call and have them bring it to you.

  • I think it may be a money thing, as well. My dad has a few wealthy cousins in the Chicago area and they NEVER go grocery shopping. They have always had their groceries delivered and were more than happy to pay the delivery fee to have it taken care of. It's apparently a pretty widespread service there in some areas.

I would be willing to pay for it only on a special-needs basis. For example, right after I had had a baby, or during an extended illness.

  • No, I wouldn't pay for that.  I wouldn't say that I particularly enjoy grocery shopping, but I have a hard time deciding ahead of time what I want to buy a lot of times.  We're a 2 career family so we are really pressed for time, but sometimes a weekend trip to the grocery is my escape (I also combine it with other errands).  Also, there are some items that I am brand loyal to, and others I am not and will buy what is best priced.

I *do* get other things delivered, for example, we do Green BEAN Delivery, but I find that the items I get there are specialty items that aren't available at Kroger and I don't want to make a special trip to Whole Foods just for a few things, but I can't do my entire list there because they don't have EVERYTHING we buy.  I wouldn't pay someone to drive up there for me, though, since a trip to WF is a reason to hit up Nordstrom Rack.  There are some things we have delivered from Amazon (diapers and coffee, for example).

I'd rather pay a babysitter to stay home with DD so I can go to the store alone (though it's never come to that) than pay someone to do my shopping for me.

  • Would they deliver Chipotle?  If so, I might consider it Stick out tongue

Really, I wouldn't use a service like that.  I try to use coupons so the logistics of that wouldn't work.  Also, there are other things I would want to spend money on instead of that (cleaning service, dinner out, etc) so that would be at the bottom of my list.  To be honest, even if I had money I don't know that I would give up the "me" time I get from going to the store for an hour or two.

Call me weird, but I like to grocery shop on occasion.  So, no I would not pay for that service.

That said, my grandmother pays for something similar.  She's 80+ years old, and doesn't drive well... and shouldn't be driving.  She pays to have a lady come take her to the grocery store, run other small errands, etc... once each week.  So, I could see the use for a service like this.

  • No, I generally like grocery shopping and picking out my own stuff. We use Green BEAN, which is different to me since they specialize in organic and local produce and other natural foods.

    Ditto what Kristen said.

  • We probably wouldn't use it on a regular basis.  Now after I had DD and couldn't drive the first 4 or 5 weeks I definitely would have loved a service like that, or my grandparents might have used it when they coudln't drive, or people that are richer than I am who don't care about coupons or a delivery fee.   I can see a business getting customers but probably not from the average family on a regular basis.
  • I have used a similar service when I lived in England.  It was ran by Tesco the supermarket chain and there was a flat rate delivery charge.  Basically I ordered online and chose a delivery time slot and paid online.  Then the next day my groceries would be delivered.  I would probably use something like that but only because the delivery charge was at the time 5GBP ($10 at that time) which was cheaper than gas/taxi.

  • In Dayton, DLM has curbside pick up for groceries.  You place an order ahead of time on-line and they have it ready for you.  You just drive up and they load it in your car.  The family I nannied for in college used this.  I wouldn't unless it was a medical need.  I like to pick out my own groceries, especially produce.
  • No, I would not pay for that type of service
