Food Allergy

Dining out with LO with multiple food allergies...

My LO is alllergic to soy, eggs, and peanuts, and most likely has a milk intolerance).  How do you do it or do you do it?  We are bringing DS's food at this point.  Do you give them anything or go to a restaurant that is good with allergies (if that exists)?  We are going away for a week and don't know what to do or how much food to bring.  TIA

Re: Dining out with LO with multiple food allergies...

  • It may be the easy way out, but I just bring all his food with us.  I'll supplement with things that he can have like applesauce or steamed veggies.  But, I never count on him being able to eat things at a restaurant.  Dairy, eggs and soy are in so many foods you'd never expect.

  • My kids have multiple food allergies and we don't take them out to dinner. My one son is extremely contact reactive and I wont take a chance. If we go out, I get a sitter. We mostly get take-out. We bring a few of their main staple foods on vacation with us, then I'll go to pick up the rest at a grocery store there. Hth
  • We don't travel anywhere there isn't a whole foods, natural grocers or farmers market. Even still, we've dealt with reactions and it's hard. As for eating out, we have learned the hard way to only go to gf places. We are lucky there are lots of places in Austin. DD has so many allergies that our current fave place is a vegan restaurant. We always ask for ingredient list. The few times early on that we tried to go to "regular" restaurants it was a disaster. She's older though so that makes a big difference.
  • It's rare that I find a restaurant I am comfortable with and order something for DS.  I always check their website or email the corporate office first.  But usually, I bring something for DS to eat.

He's only 2 so no one has questioned this yet but I've heard as he gets older we may experience push back from restaurants.  Most don't allow outside food and I've heard of families being asked to leave because they brought food in.

When we are traveling, McDonald's chicken nuggets (without sauce), apples (again without the sauce) and apple juice are a Godsend.   I've also had good experiences with Red Robin (they have a huge allergy binder they hand you so you can choose something appropriate) and Outback (ask for the manager and explain your allergy situation.  Ask them to cook LO's steak/chicken in a clean pan without butter - their website suggests this).  The group that owns Chili's also has good info on their website but we haven't been to Chili's yet.

I second Red Robin and Outback. Once you explain the situation, they're very helpful and understanding. We also have a fav chinese place where we know she's safe. She loves her some white rice and cumin lamb.

  • I am BF so it's me who has to worry about what I eat so it's a bit different, but I recently found this amazing website:

    https://www.goeggless.com/

It doesn't address peanuts or soy, but milk and eggs. Of course, most restaurants cannot guarantee against cross contamination, but it's a start.

  • We try to avoid restaurants or we bring our own food if we have to go to one.  I know Maggiano's is awesome with food allergies (when I was on an elimination diet they sent the chef out to meet with me and brought all of my stuff on separate plates.)

  • I usually bring all non cold foods with us and buy the cold stuff when we get there. As for restaurants, I either call ahead or look online and see what he can eat. Eating out is risky since cross-contamination is so easy, so we rarely go out. Applebees fries are dairy free, btw :)

  • we bring all of his food. The only thing i ever order from a restaurant for him is a cup of fruit and/or sliced cucumbers

We recently flew to florida and i shopped a box of his food (oatmeal, milk, portable stove, pasta, cereal..)  I also took with me on the plane almond butter so he pretty much had the same food every single day. b/c i had to make it as simple as possible.

    BF: Oatmeal
    snack: fruit from the restaurant
LN: almond butter / rice crisp balls or almond butter / chex sandwiches
    snack: cucumber and/or fruit
    DN: pasta with "cheese" sauce

this was every day for 6 days.

I also made enough pasta for 2 to 3 days so i only had to make his dinner twice while on vacation.

  • We just got back from a week long vacation.  It was hard for sure.  We never go out to eat at home because it is just too hard and too much work.  We bring all of her food, and can sometimes order steamed broccoli and a baked potato at places.  She had a reaction after sitting in a high chair once.  She got hives on the back of her legs, so I have learned my lesson to really wipe down the chair if I don't have a cover for it.

  • We always pack a cooler and get a room with a fridge.  We rarely eat out and when we do, I usually feed the kids first since I can't guarantee that they'll be able to eat anything there or like what is being served.  to me, though, this is the easiest way to travel.  I never have to worry about feeding them, we always have what they need/like.  We also bring a cooler bag with us to eat when we're out and about.

  • if we take LO out to eat with us we bring his food. I'll third the Red Robbin Allergy Binder... however, sunday we went to Red Robbin and ordered there fries season free and I noticed at the bottom of the basket there were a couple fries that def had seasoning on them... awesome! (please note my scarasim). We have yet to travel a place where we didn't have a full kitchen or at least a frige/microwave.
