Dh and I are getting a sitter for the first time Saturday night. It is a co-worker of his, single mom, who offered to sit sometime for us. She will most likely have to give DS one bottle and put him to bed.
I usually pay our sitter like $8-10/hour, depends on what she has to do...like bed, feed things like that. I like to be a little generous in hopes that she will continue to babysit for us.

We are in a big city, but we pay $11-13 per hour regardless of what they do (we figure we are paying for their time regardless of what we need them to do). Plus tip and/ or cab fare home. And that is for experienced college students.
Brought to you by IVF, ICSI, limited fert, and oocyte cryopreservation. Because we're fancy like that.
I live in MI, too. Its a LCOL area/small town, and we pay $7.40 per hour (minimum wage). I pay more than quite a few people I know and less than a few friends who have more than on LO. HTH!

In the Boston area, we pay our 2 day a week babysitter $16 an hour for 2 kids. For a high school student, I have been told to "pay the grade" - 10th grade =$10 an hour, etc.
Re: going rate for babysitters?
I think it depends on where you live, as to what is common. I live in a suburb of a major Canadian city.
We get a high school neighbour to sit for a few hours when we go out after G is in bed. We pay her $10/hour
Because we're fancy like that.
Here in NY it's $15-20/hr, which is crazy - hence we never go out!
