Ladies, is 31 weeks too late for a baby shower?

Hi, I'm expecting twins October 28, 2011.  In regards to comfort, do you think 31 weeks is too late to have a shower?

TIA

Re: Ladies, is 31 weeks too late for a baby shower?

  • I was 31 weeks when we had my baby shower.  I had to drive 2 hours to get there, which sucked, but other than that it was fine!

  • That is when my mom wanted to have mine and I begged her to have it earlier (based on info I read here)  She changed it and I had one at 26 weeks and the other (my MIL) at 28 weeks.  I think that time frame worked great b/c I still felt ok and I was able to put stuff away and do exchanges after the shower.

I am so glad I did not have it at 31 weeks b/c I ended up going on bed-rest at 32 weeks.

  • I was going to have mine at 31 weeks, but I was on bed rest by 24 weeks and was checked into the hospital at around 31 weeks.  So we had one while the girls were in the NICU.  Of course, plenty of twin mommas are just fine at 31 weeks and were absolutely capable of going to a shower.

  • I don't think so. But I did my baby shower for my son after he was born, and plan on doing the same with this time around. It's a lot more fun when you have the baby, or babies in this case, to let people hold.

  • Yes.

I had mine at 24 weeks... and it was perfect.  I was big enough to "look pregnant" to satisfy all the gawkers, but not too pregnant that I was uncomfortable during the party.  It also gave me enough time to figure out what I got and didn't get, and then fill in the gaps.

  • I don't think it's too late BUT it will all totally depend on how your pg is going. I fortunately was still able to be active/mobile at 31 weeks but I was thankful my freinds/family threw mine at around 27 weeks "just in case" I were to have to be on BR or something. Also, my MFM wanted me to stop traveling (not sure if this is an issue of yours or not re: the shower) by 32 weeks max, so you might want to check with your dr.

  • Ladies, thanks for the reponses.

I'm still confused because of the mixed bag of answers, but I'm under the impression that the earlier (28-29 weeks) the better.

  • I just had my baby shower yesterday!  But I've also had a very uneventful pregnancy (thankfully) and felt great.

I was nervous at first, with the date being so late, but all it worked it!

  • I think it's too late.  I had mine at 30 weeks, which I thought was late.  But with other events going on around that time, it was the only weekend that worked.  Luckily I made it to mine, but I went into PTL the following week and ended up on hospital bedrest for 3 weeks.  So had it been scheduled for a week later, there is no way I would have made it.

I think it's too late.  Mine was around 27 weeks or so and it was perfect.  I had a cute bump but wasn't ginormous.  I also was able to do some returns and exchanges before getting around became too arduous.  I quit working around 31 weeks and I wasn't able to do all that much after that other than hang out around the house.  I made it to my scheduled c-section with no signs of labor but I wasn't running around doing too much before then.

  • I would do it during the weeks of the mid to late 20s to be safe and for you to be more comfortable

  • I had mine at 28 weeks, and had just been placed on bed rest by my doctor.  She gave me a free pass to go as long as I spent the majority of my time in the recliner with my feet up.  We also had to move the shower at the last minute because it was originally 2 hours away, and my OB said she'd prefer if it were a shorter car ride for me.   Even though I followed her orders I was exhausted and crampy by the end of the day, and didn't really enjoy it as much as I would have even just 2 weeks earlier.  I also wasn't able to be the one to put things exactly where I wanted them in the nursery.  Sorry to be a Debby downer, but IMO I wouldn't go much past 26 weeks to be on the safe side.

ETA: Also, FWIW, I was in the hospital on bed rest at 31 weeks

    Ladies, thanks for the reponses.

I'm still confused because of the mixed bag of answers, but I'm under the impression that the earlier (28 weeks) the better, depending on how the pregnancy is going.

I know it's kind of confusing because some people were fine at that point and some were not. Twin pregnancies definitely vary on how they can go but they can also be very unpredictable and change quickly (not trying to freak you out).  I would say at the very least, you will probably be somewhat uncomfortable at 31 week so for the sake of your comfort so you can really enjoy your shower, if you can, do it before 27/28 weeks like you're thinking.

  • I think it depends how far you have to travel. If it's local, I think you're fine as long as the hostess knows you may be on bedrest and may need to change location based on your needs. I had my local shower at 31 weeks. I was late to it b/c I was in the hospital being checked for PTL. Once I got there, it was awesome! I would say if there is anything you feel you need (e.g. carseats, bottles, etc), don't wait for the shower just in case babies come early.

    This.

I was on hospital bedrest from week 22 to 32 (when I delivered). We had my baby shower in the hospital at 30 weeks, but I had originally planned for it to be at 26 weeks. You never know with twin pregnancies. I say mid to late 20 weeks.

  • I had mine at 31 weeks. I was big but still functioning okay and still felt decent most days. It went rapidly downhill after that though...

I had mine at 34 weeks because we moved into a new house when I was 31 weeks (builder issues) and then I was MOH for my sisters wedding at 32 weeks. 34 weeks was fine for me because I had a lot going on. My pregnancy was pretty easy though.

  • I had mine at 26 weeks, which is good since I was admitted at 28 wks for PTL and would have missed it had it been later.

  • I will be 29 weeks for mine, i've had a really uneventful pregnancy...thank heavens!! i think between 27-30 is totally fine, as long as you are feeling good. i'm 23 weeks and i'm starting to feel uncomfy sitting too long!
  • I'm not having one but wanted to throw in I think 25-28 weeks probably will be a good timeframe for you. I went into PTL at 25 weeks and have been on bedrest ever since. I am now 31w3d and quite honestly, even if it weren't for the bedrest, any type of travel right now would be uncomfortable. I am measuring 38 weeks and you likely will be measuring 6-8 weeks ahead so keep that in mind.
  • I asked this same question on here a few months ago and the average answer I got was 28 weeks so that's when my shower was scheduled for. About a month and a half ago we had to change it to 29 weeks and it's a good thing we did since I was in L&D on the day of my original shower with contractions. I wound up on bedrest after that but was still allowed to go to my shower at 29 weeks.

I think the earlier the better, just in case!

  • I think its fine.. i had mine at 28 weeks and would have been fine to have it at 31. I definately wouldn't have done it any later then 32 though, i started getting more and more uncomfortable

  • I had 2 baby showers. The first was planned for when I was 28 weeks and the second when I was 30w4d.

I had an uneventful pregnancy until 2 days before the first baby shower. I was put on bedrest then for a shortening cervix. I still went to the babyshower but wasn't allowed to move/do anything. Wasn't exactly ideal.

Fast forward to 29w6d, I went into labor. Had the boys at 30w exactly. My baby shower was planned for my release date from the hospital. I went straight from being discharged to my baby shower.

Like other pp have said, I definately recommend doing it before 28 weeks. I wanted to have the first when I was around 25-26 weeks, but had scheduling conflicts.

    GL! :)

  • Mine was planned for 33w and I went on hospital bed rest at 32w.  They had the shower without me and I talked to them on the phone/skyped.  I was sad I couldn't be there, but what can you do?

More than likely you'll be fine, but you may want to push it up a couple weeks.

  • Mine were at 29 weeks and 30 weeks.

My 30 week shower was my "big" shower - and my sister and BF hosted it at my house.  That made it SO easy for me.  They cleaned my house the day before, and the morning of my shower, my friend took me out for manis/pedis while they set-up.  I came back, changed my clothes, and went downstairs to my party!  So easy.  I was able to sit on my couch with my feet up when I needed to, but I felt pretty good.  I could have done it at someone else's house, but having it here made it so much easier.

If you can do it before 31 weeks, I'd recommend it.
