This weekend we were running errands and I had Charlotte in the front basket of a shopping cart, and she was wearing sandals and kept taking them off and throwing them in the back of the cart. She's 2 years old and sandals are easy to remove so ya know... it happens. Anyway, this woman (who also had a child) looked at her feet, looked at me and then was very obvious about the fact that she was disgusted and thought I was a terrible person and shook her head to make her point. I will admit it is kind of a pet peeve of mine to see kids without shoes on in public, but you know there is a difference between taking a kid out without putting shoes on them in the first place, and a kid who has her shoes right there but just keeps taking them off. You can usually tell the difference. Either way, I'd never give the mom a look to shame her. And I have to say that aside from Charlotte taking her shoes off my children were clean, clothed, attended to and behaving nicely in public... can I get a little credit for that?
Anyway, fast forward a half hour... we're done shopping, kids are loaded up in the car and as I was getting in, I see a small child about Charlotte's age RUN OUT INTO THE PARKING LOT! I mean all the way out the door, into the crosswalk on a busy Saturday afternoon, cars slamming their breaks on all around her. I immediately noticed her (being that she was a toddler running into traffic unattended) and no parent in sight. She was out there for a good 30 seconds before anyone came running out of the store after her. Guess who??? The same lady who gave me the dirtiest look ever because my (secured) child had her shoes off. I'd laugh about it if she hadn't almost killed her kid. I mean really? How does that even happen? Guess she was busy noticing another child without shoes on when her child was all the way out the door. I felt like saying to her "I just wanted to let you know... you're a big jerk!"
Re: Just when you think you're perfect...
First of all, I can't believe she *shamed* you. That's just stupid. I think people need to get over themselves!
And oh my goodness, I can't believe it took that long for her to realize her daughter was outside! That's scary stuff. I'm glad the little girl was okay.
Annabelle never keeps her shoes on, so I know how you feel. Half the time I keep her shoes in the car because I don't want to lose them in a store, or wherever.
#2 - other than the fact that her kid almost got hurt, I kinda want to LMBO at the judgy lady. Judging you for something so trivial, then her child's in a totally unsafe situation. Because, it's all about priorities... right?
I would not have been able to hold my tongue. Actually, I probably would've said, very calmly, "Maybe next time you'll keep your judgments to yourself."
what a gem
I don't put shoes on Nathan, ever. Its hot out, he can't walk, and he has lost a mate to a shoe twice already so whats the point.
I hope this was the same lady who harassed me on the phone regarding the swingset fiasco. She has "karma" coming back to her, lol.
I am SO glad that the poor kid is okay!! That is so scary. I would be freaking out.
