Anyone deal with thrush?

I hate life right now. M had an ear infection and was put on antibiotics, and now I'm positive he's come down with oral thrush -- he has the tell-tale symptoms of white patchy areas on his mouth. I sterilized all of his pacifiers and I'm going to clean his toys tonight. I don't think he's passed it to me yet, and I want to do everything in my power to make sure he doesn't, because I've heard horrible things about thrush. I'm going to call his pedi in the morning, but I have a feeling they'll want me to bring him in, which I really don't want to do, because I already took 3 days off work last week. Dr. google tells me that there are some OTC remedies that work pretty well for thrush, including something called gentian violet. Anyone try that? Where can I find it locally? Any other advice?

Re: Anyone deal with thrush?

  • I'm so sorry :(

could you nurse with a shield for a few days until he's not contagious?

others may know better but I thought thrush was usually passed from Mom to baby, not the other way around?

    hope he's better ASAP!

  • post this on the BFing board. i've heard mixed reviews about gentian violet -that it works but it's not 100% safe and that it stains everything purple, and i'm sure that's where i heard all this. my LC recommended wiping my breast with a diluted vinegar solution before and after feeding. that along with sterilizing everything (and if you pump, sterilize your pump parts/bottles after each use) might help avoid passing it back and forth.

i haven't dealt with thrush but i hope you don't get it!

  • Thanks, I did post this on the BFing board earlier and I got some helpful advice. I'm waiting for a call back from his pedi's office. Sigh.

  • Hey! We had a nasty case of thrush (went through 3 rounds of antibiotics) before using gentian violet with pedi's OK. We did the full thrush protocol (daily boils of bottles and nipples, washing everything we wore and towels in hot water).

With gentian violet, we gave it to DS right after his bath. I used a q-tip, dipped it in water, then dipped in the gentian violet and let DS suck it off the q-tip. We managed to keep the purple under control. It cleared up in 4 days. I got the 1 percent solution at CVS. Good luck!

  • Thanks, DCtoLow. Did you end up with it, too? That's my biggest worry. From what I'm reading, it seems like it doesn't bother the babies too much, but it's a PITA for the moms. We have a pedi appt. for this afternoon and I hope they have some suggestions.

  • you know, you could always just pump for a few days and not BF at all, at his age, he will have no problems going back to the boob even if it's a week or more w/out.
  • When DS had thrush, the doctor didn't even make me come in. She called me at home and then called in a prescription for DS.
