DS fell of a step and split open his gums last night

He split open all of the gums above his upper 4 teeth, maybe more, he doesn't let me really look. He may have also hurt that little piece that holds your lip to your gums. He slept all night with no issue and is eating and drinking but his gums are bleeding again.

When I say bleeding, I mean the blood is coming out of the front of his mouth but I wouldn't consider it a lot of blood.

Should I call the doctor? Or just let it be?

  • I would call just to be on the safe side.

  • Oh poor guy. :(  I hate mouth injuries because they bleed so badly.  I would call to be on the safe side.

  • When I was in college, the little boy I nannied ran into the footboard of his parents bed and that piece of skin was cut.  We called the pediatrician and they said not to worry about it.

If it is more than just that one piece and you are worried, what can you hurt in calling?  Better to be safe than sorry, right?

  • The same thing happened to my son on Saturday.  The cut you are describing sounds worse than ours, though.  I would get it checked out by a doctor for peace of mind.  I'll tell you our specific experience in case it helps.

Ours happened on a weekend so we ended up going to the ER after calling the urgent care place we usually go to...I wish our regular pediatrician was available!!  They asked if the teeth looked like they were in their normal position, and higher up or lower down than usual.  They discovered that one was slightly loose and told us to eat soft foods for a few days (instructions would be different if it was very loose).  They gave us a syringe to rinse out the cut if food crumbs get in it.  They asked if he was showing any of the signs for head injury.

Also, everyone (dr, nurse, urgent care) said the mouth heals very easily so if it's still bleeding in a couple of days we needed to follow up with someone because that is unusual.

Again, I would at least call your doctor to see what they recommend.  Sorry to give so much detail.  Hope it helps!

  • Thanks ladies!!

I am going to go check to see if his teeth are loose.

The crap part is we are new to our town and I don't have a pedi yet. I have been looking for one but haven't found one I love yet :(

  • My son busted his twice in 2weeks from tripping over his own feet.  The first time we were already at the doctors office (talk about timing), he took a peak said nothing to worry about, just keep it clean, it will heal fast on its own.   He also said that all mouth injuries will look alot worse than they are and heal even faster.   Just check for loose teeth.   He healed within a few days and did it again the next week lol.
