need sleep help w/ds

he has been fighting nap times all week, if not the past 2 weeks, well now it's progressing to bedtime too. but seriously this fighting sleep thing has been going on for at least a week now. yesterday he fell asleep in the car... on the way home and he desperately needed to be changed so we changed him before putting him back down, well that totally ruined nap time apparently, and he refused to go to sleep.

so we just let him stay up... then at like 4 he falls asleep on the floor while playing w/his toys lol. then we had to wake him up so we could go out to dinner w/family and then we had an hour long meltdown before we could get him to calm down.

anyway, if we ask him are you ready for nap/bedtime he just shakes his head no, and then proceeds to freak out when we try to do it anyway.

is this normal almost 2 year old behavior? some sort of phase??

we've had such a great routine going and he hasn't needed any assistance in going to bed or nap in many many months. what the heck is going on?!! :-(

Re: need sleep help w/ds

  • J sort of went through something similar fighting naps/bed. I have to let him know about 30min in advance that naptime is coming up. I remind him again at 10 or 15min and then set a timer for the last 5min. He knows when the timer goes off that it's time for bed.

To help with this, we started letting him watch one 30min show and would remind him over & over that when the show went off it was time for nap/bed.

Good luck - sleeping issues are no fun!

We've gone through stages where C fights naps. I've never really just let him stay up, I put him in his room & in his bed, lock & shut the door. He occasionally cries/screams for a while. If he continues that I will check on him in about 15 minutes, and put him back in bed - then wash, rinse & repeat. I'll do that for up to an hour. I think he's only stayed awake once, and then we relaxed with a movie.

We have a bedtime routine, we get on PJs, read 2-3 books, then we both tuck him in and say good night. Occasionally, if he asks for another book - we'll give him 1 or 2 in bed and let him look at the books himself. He'll usually look at them for a few minutes before putting them down and going to sleep.

Oh, if DH is home - sometimes he'll rock him to sleep or sit next to the bed and watch him go to sleep. I'm not usually that nice:)

Excellent point! Naptime is not an option around here...Momma needs some sanity time!

i'm with you on this! which is why i'm so frustrated! lol.

but i can't get any sanity when i put him down for a nap and he is having a howling growling crying fit.

i've ended up rocking him to sleep for naps which eventually works but sometimes it takes over an hour of trying.  i'm just getting really frustrated and don't know what's going on with him.

he is teething so i'm just hopeful that this is something that will go away soon..... but now that it's been a week and counting, and the fact that it's only getting worse, i'm starting to lose hope!  :-(
