Food Allergy

Feeling deflated

My daughter was retested yesterday for her allergies.  I was feeling so optimistic.  I was crushed to hear her peanut allergy has gotten so much worse.  Her hive was off the charts.  I was hoping she would be in the lucky 20% that outgrow peanut.  Makes me so sad.

I was talking to a coworker the other day and she was saying that she and her husband are irate that when their 4-year old daughter goes on field trips with day care, and they have to pack food, they can't bring peanuts or tree nuts.  She was saying how it infringes on her rights and it is so inconvenient for them and they shouldn't have to worry about it.  I was holding back tears.  Must be nice to only have to be inconvienced 5 times a year rather than every day of your life.

On the bright side, my daughter may have outgrown soy.  We are waiting on blood test results for confirmation.  Being allergic to dairy, this will open up so many more foods for her.  Fingers are crossed!

Re: Feeling deflated

  • I'm sorry that your co-worker is so inconsiderate and I hope her child isn't being raised to not think about others in the same way. I do not understand when people react that way at all. My son doesn't have a peanut allergy (he has Celiac Disease), but I know so many kids that do and it's no joke. A child's right to eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich does not supersede a life or death allergy of another child. It is not an infringement on her rights at all. Like smoking or not drinking and driving, it's a health issue that can and should be "controlled" for the health and welfare of the greater population. I hope you stood up to her and let her know how ridiculous she sounds when she talks this way. I'm sorry your daughter's nut allergy did not go away and my fingers are crossed that she outgrows some of her other allergies.

  • Ugg...I'm sorry.  I was so excited when DS#3's peanut number went down a little.  Then I found out he tested positive for tree nuts - blast!  The food allergy ride really is a roller coaster.

And I'm also sorry you had to be subjected to your ignorant co-worker.  It really is tough - hang in there!

  • We had a sad testing appt too (in March).  We were very excited because he just seemed healthier in general and we were cautiously optimistic.  While we were waiting for the scratch test results, his reactions didn't look bad at all and then we realized that egg whites, egg yolks and peanuts all got a lot worse.  I am not giving up hope, but they did say not to come back for 18 months (rather than a year).

As for your co-worker.  Why do people think food allergies are not a real issue"?  It is like they think they are a trend or something that people do for attention.  My sister got in a huge fight with a friend because she was b*itching about the audacity of people to want to ban peanuts on planes.  You have to try to educate people, sometimes just 1 moron at a time.

  • Indifferent WOW at your coworker! Sheesh, Heaven forbid they have to pack turkey instead of PB&J. Good for you for taking the moral high road on that one, I wouldn't have been able to. Something like "I'm sorry that the health and life of my child inconveniences your choice in Lunchables" would have been the next thing out of my mouth.

I'm sorry about how tough it is for you. I can't completely sympathize as a parent yet (I am hopeful that my little bean won't have the same issues with foods that I do), but I can understand from a personal level. I am very lucky that exposure doesn't cause me any issues, but cross contamination is enough of a worry. I am so hopeful that people will continue to become more aware and that companies/the FDA will work towards making the industry more allergy friendly.

  •  Don't feel bad that the allergy went up.  It goes up a lot before going back down. They said between 2 and 5 (or 3 and 5) they go crazy and then they calm down. So you can still be one of the lucky ones.  I'm just hoping for a cure by the time my child is 5.   But congrats on the soy!!! that's huge.  I would rather have my son outgrow soy than milk b/c i feel like soy is in everything and milk can be substituted easily by just finding vegan recipes.

i can't believe your co-worker. Does she know your situation?  i probably would have said.. it's a perfect time to teach your child about compassion for another human life.  She probably needs to learn compassion herself.

I feel sorry for people that don't get it b/c i know that they are just ignorant and don't know better. I learned that NO ONE will ever get it until they are placed in the situation or until they are rushing their child's lifeless body to the ER and are praying they survive.
