Bi-lingual

DH and I think it is very important for A to be bilingual in Spanish/English. There is a spanish immersion school in a school district close to us, however the school district isn't the best. ( I should point out that this school is great though) A would be going there K-8 and then transferring out to a better district for school.

I don't think she will truly be bilingual unless she is put into an immersion school. Do you think it is worth it to put her into a "bad" district to get this major life skill?

Re: Bi-lingual

  • Send her to a good school and then look for summer immersion programs. BFF did this, spent several summers abroad and is fluent in multiple dialects of Spanish. Let her get the best education, wherever that may be, and then address the language.

This.  No use in worrying about other aspects of her education just to be bilingual.  It's an important skill, but there are other ways to get her there.

  • You said that this school is really good though. So if this school is good, why does the rest of the district matter? Maybe I'm missing something, because I went to private schools, but I don't see a problem if the school itself is good.

Crap, I'm confused. I thought the normal school = good school, immersion school = crummy school. Send her to the better school, regardless of the language spoken. If immersion is better school, send her there.

  • A lot can change in the next 5 years.  I would just follow what's going on, but not worry for a few more years.

DH is mostly fluent and never went to special school. He just had family memebrs that spoke primarily in spanish to him.  We are doing the same with Amanda.
