Pregnant after 35

One week to go

So, I have been hanging out at the hospital for the past 9 days (10 days at the Ronald McDonald House before that) as we prepare for our c-section.  We have an offical date of June 20th (one week to go) and while I thought I was totally fine with a c-section, I'm starting to get a little nervous.  I have never undergone surgery before and I have to say that the two things that are making me the most nervous are the spinal/epidural (not sure which one) and the idea that I will still be able to feel them tugging on me even if I don't feel the pain.

I am amazed at how many people have given birth while I have been here on the maternity wing, June is one very busy month!  Some go home quite quickly while others are here a bit longer.  I hear the newborns crying and I said to my husband, "they all sound the same to me, will I know ours when he cries?  Will he sound different to me?"  Here's hoping for one more uneventful week and even though he will be early (36 weeks 1 day) here's hoping his time, if any, in the NICU will be limited.

  • And breathe and relax!

You don't have to have an epidural/spinal. You can elect to having them put you out. That is always an option. Sorry I am needle phobic and would rather not to have needle near me ever. I don't care how good the anesthesiologist  is at it. Just not in me thank you.

Here's hoping you son's time is 0 in the NICU.

  • I have had three c/s and will have a fourth.  Since you will not be laboring at all, you will have a spinal.  It works faster than an epidural and wears off faster as well.  If you are nervous, you can talk to the anes. in advance.  You might feel some pressure, etc. but it should not hurt.  The anes. will be with you in the OR and if you are having issues will be available to talk to you.  If something goes awry and the pain meds are not working, they can have you out in about 10 seconds.  This is what I have been told multiple times.

I also hate needles but have managed to make it through okay.  You will not even see it.  I would not want to be be put out and miss seeing the baby asap but do what is best for you.

  • One more week!  How exciting!

I also hope his NICU time will be almost zero or zero!

I think it's normal to be nervous about the process, whether it's a section or labor.  Talking with your doctor or the nurses should help settle your nerves, I think.  Good luck!
