Best diapers for a kid who pees A LOT

So DS chugs water all day long, and in turn, pees an insane amount. So much so that I even called the Dr. to see if it was normal (he said it was). It's hard to keep up with changing his diaper enough, especially when we're out and about. Lately he's been peeing through his diapers, so we moved him up a size, and he's still peeing through them on a daily basis. He leaks through his diaper every.single.time we go out now, and can pee through it in less than an hour flat. We use Costco Kirkland diapers but I'm thinking maybe I need to switch to something more absorbent/leakproof? I've also thought about using those diaper booster pads. Anyone have this problem? Suggestions on a better diaper to use for a frequent pee-er?

  • I like Huggies and also Target diapers hold a lot of pee.

  • We use Luvs and have had a few leak issues but only when he drinks a lot of juice/water and we don't change him for 3 hours.  Have you thought about using the overnight diapers for going out?  I thought Pampers Baby Dry was really great but we opted to go with Luvs since they're cheaper and just try to remember to change him frequently. GL!

  • DD chugs water/juice/soy milk all day and pees a LOT.  We have to use Huggies because DD's allergic to everything else, but we've noticed a difference even between the different kinds of Huggies.  We can't use Snug & Dry at home because she has had several accidents within 2.5 hours.  I do however send Snug & Dry to daycare with her because her liquid intake is a bit more regulated there.  That and they have a very rigid changing schedule.  The absolute longest she will ever be in a diaper there is 2.5 hours.  We use the (more expensive) Little Movers at home and she's usually pretty good.  We use Overnights with a diaper booster for nighttime.  The booster is fantastic, but I don't know that I'd use them during the day.  They get kind of bulky once they're wet.

  • This is DS, at home I just change him every hour! When we leave the house I try to limit his water intake for an hour before we are leaving and I put a Fisher Price overnight diaper on him. That tends to give me 2/2.5 hours before I need to change him. I hate using changing tables in public restrooms. I used to change him in the car, but he's getting too big for that and it's so hot out! That's one of the reasons we want a van, so I can change him on the floor of the van with the doors closed and a/c on!
  • Try Huggies Overnights.  My niece uses these because she drinks a lot before bed and used to leak out of her diapers, but these saved the day (night?) for my sister.  :)

At one point, BRU stopped carrying diaper doublers, but they're back now.  I love them b/c my 3yo is still a heavy wetter at night even though he's been PT'ed for a long time, and they're way cheaper than moving to an overnight diaper.  Basically it's sort of like a maxi pad w/o the plastic liner or adhesive, and you just put it in the diaper like a liner.  Love these!

  • I love my Pampers Cruisers. I buy them on Amazon. It's so worth it to me. We ran out of them last week and had to use Target brand. It was AWFUL.

  • We love Pampers.  I am kind-of surprised to see so many recs for Huggies since DS leaked out of Huggies every time he wore them.  We also have a pack of Huggies at daycare for DD because we got them as a gift when she was born, and DCP usually changes DD about half an hour before we pick her up.  No more than an hour later and we have to change her because it's completely saturated, bulky and smells really bad.  And she's not an excessive pee-er.  But that's just my personal experience.

  • I made the switch to target a long time ago. The only time we have had an issue was when we moved him up in sizes a little too early. Overnights work great with us, we use Huggies.

This, except that we've had two or three leaks in the almost 2 years that we've been using them. They hold a LOT!

  • Maybe you could try an overnight diaper.  My DD was leaking through diapers every night until we tried the extra protection Pampers and now, no leaks!  Maybe your son could just wear them all the time.  Good luck!

  • DS has the same problem. I did try the diaper doublers & they work really well at night but can't stand them during the day. They weighed his diaper down & actually made it leak when he was walking around. I LOVE them for night time use though, I use that inside a Huggies over night diaper in the next size up. For day time use we use Huggies Snug & Dry (little movers just didn't seem to hold as much & are more expensive) when we are at home & I put him in Huggies overnight diaper (in the correct size during the day) when we are going to be out or in the car for any length of time. This is the best way I have found to keep him from leaking through his clothes at this point. I think every kid is different in how different brands fit them. We occasionally use Pampers overnights if they are on sale but they definitely don't fit him like Huggies do. He is super skinny & his thighs are like toothpicks so it really just depends on their body shape more than anything, I think. Good luck, hopefully you can find something that works!
