Re: anyone close to my age? (43)

  • Hi,

I am 42, I will be 43 in December. I am just beginning my second round of IVF.

If I don't conceive this time, I still have two more tries covered by insurance. I am not certain if I will continue, but I am now considering adoption.

I say go for it! Best wishes!

  • 41 here...for sure I wrestle with the "am I too old for this" with each and every BFN. I have told myself...this was not my life plan to be still trying for #1 in my 40's but it is what it is and the universe must have a plan. I have just conpleted the insemination for our 2nd completed IUI. I'm may be older but i know that I can give a good life to my future child, no matter my age!

  • Yep, I am 42.  43 won't be until next April.  We have decided that we will TTC until end of Dec 2011.  We will either have BFP by then, or we will be moving on to other things.  At our age, we are very focused on saving for our retirement and costs of IF are challenging our savings goals.  We have insurance, but had to switch to an HMO to get coverage for IVF.  Still, OOP we are nearing $5000 mark and we haven't even been trying with help for a year yet.  We will be changing our insurance back to PPO at start of new year, as we cannot afford another $2500 deductible for meds and the many copays and additional expenses involved.  Good luck with whatever you choose.  It's not a very easy road.......but, I know for us having an end date really makes things much more tolerable.
TTC since 10/09 Me-43 DH-44 RE and testing 10/10-11/10, Recommending IVF 1/11 New RE AMA and DOR-DH low motility IVF #1.1 cancelled 3/11 due to poor response IVF #1.2 May 2011, one perfect 8-cell embryo, 3dt-BFN, IVF #2.1 Converted to IUI d/t poor response. New RE 9/2011. IVF 2.2 completed using HGH,EPP,DHEA, Q-10 and accupuncture. Transferred one 8-cell, grade one embryo on 10/19. BFP 10/31/11 Chemical pregancy on 11/2/11. Started stims for IVF #3, our final try, on 12-2-11. ET on 12/18. Transferred 3 Grade A embryos-BFFN Planning DE IVF, late March/early April- Donors ER expected to be 4/2-4/4. PAIF/SAIF welcome
  • I'm 44 1/2  and just had my first consult with an RE last week.  The 20% chance of conceiving and carrying the pregnancy successfully was devastating though I knew the chances weren't going to be great.  DH and I haven't decided whether to go though with IVF given the stats, the enormous costs and all our tests haven't been done yet, so the jury is still out

    All good luck to you!

  • Thank you ladies for your comments! You don't know how many people are negative when I tell them that I want a baby. I've learned to ignore those people. I talked to DH and he told me to find out how much the iui w/injections will cost. We really can't afford the donor egg IVF so I guess if iui's don't work then that is my closure I will need or need to accept. Good Luck everyone!

  • I'm 42 and just started to try for our second. I'm getting acupuncture to help. We'll see what happens. I had my DS when I was 39 (13 days short of my 40th b-day).

Oh, and I just got my FSH tested and I was only 8.1 on Day 3 with Estriadol at 30 so my numbers look good.

I'm in my 30's, but there is a fantablulous girl on the Parenting Over 35 board and the Pregnant Over 35 board who is 43 and working on her 2nd. Her name's Peppernut and she would be the last person to say you're too old :)
  • I am 43. We started TTC last year right after we were married.  We have had no luck. We went to a fertility doctor and he wouldn't even consider IUI for us and IVF is too expensive for us. So we have been trying on our own to no avail.  Unfortunately, for me, I think it is the end of the road. But I am not saying that for everyone, that is just in my own little world.  DH has a 14 year-old daughter from his first marriage.  This is my first marriage and I never had children.  I wish you nothing but the best.  Please keep me informed on your progress.  I can't say we've given up completely but I think we have accepted the fact that it just might not happen.

All my best and lots of baby dust to you.

  • Hi,

Its been awhile for me on this board (I still lurk), but in the same boat.   We got married around 39 and tried 3  IUI's and a failed IVF (Frozen egg study) until I was 41.   Then we decided to take a break and reconsider our options.

Now we are building a new home, so we want to wait until next year to restart, but I will be 43...ugh where did time go!.

My insurance will pay for IVF, but my eggs just cant get the job done, so we need to use donor eggs...which are not covered.   So it will be about 11 grand out of pocket for the donnor and IVF that follow, depending on the egg count, which we could swing after the house is done.    But I really worry that I will be 44/45 when I get PG and/or deliver at this rate.  I know we would be great parents, but is 45 to old?

That being said I have baby fever really bad again.....my husband is a trooper and up for anything I want to try.   But all our friends and relatives (except my mother) are like adopt or maybe your chance has passed.

I am right there with you!

  • I did IVF for both kids b/c of dh's issues but of course, my age was a factor.  I was 40 when I had my first child.  I was 43 when I had my second.

My best friend just had a baby at 42 (no medical help).  Another used donor eggs at 44 and had her first baby (after 4 m/c's with her own eggs).  Another friend did IUI to have her first child at 40 and then got pregnant again without medical help at 42.

There are a lot of us out there- don't give up hope!

3 IUI's and 2 IVF's later- Brady arrived. Born at 36 weeks after PUPPS and pre-e/HELLP.
IUI- BFN IVF #1 -BFP! Allie is our 2nd IVF baby. Born at 36 1/2 weeks after pre-e again

  • Classicoyo - I to find IVF expensive. We need donor eggs and that is $20,000. Just spoke with my dr and she said I can do another iui w/o injections. Injections at this point wouldn't really improve the situation. Guess she was trying to save me some money. I guess I will try. If my husband was on board with me about adoption I would go that route. If this soul is meant to be then I hope it shows up soon!

Mel - It urks me that we bought a new house and if I would of know my husband was going to change his mind then I prob would do the IVF. The baby fever strikes me also. One month I'm ok then the next I'm crying when I visit my friends with their new babies. I only think I'm too old  because I tire easily working 11hrs a day. Scared I will be too tired for a baby. Fingers crossed everything works out for us. Just not sure how to find closure and really except the fact no kids will be in our lives..you know?

  • I am almost 41. we've been trying for 5 cycles. have a cyst, albeit a small one. RE wants to give me progestin...but I'm scared to start it...he wants to starve the cyst that is screwing with my estradiol levels and 'reset my clock" since my last cycle was only 13 days...does this sound like something anyone has gone through?
  • i am 42.  we've been trying for a year now.  dh is 48.  my age is the only cause of infertility.  we've been tested and all results are normal.  i've had 2 inseminations with clomid and 2 with follistim...all negative.  we are trying to do ivf.  first round on follistim and menopur resulted in cancelled ivf and insemination w/ 3 eggs.  again, negative.  on our way to dr. tomorrow am to see if we are going thru w/ ivf or doing an insemination.  so far...i have 1 large and 4 small follicles.  our doctor is recommending we turn to donor eggs if this cycle fails.  he says my age will not be a factor with donor eggs and our chances will increase.  i don't think you (we) are too old...it's just a matter of how much you're willing/able to try before considering donor eggs or adoption.

  • Hi

I'm 44 and have been ttc forever. My ex-husband(my highschool sweetheart) and I tried for at least 10 years before we divorced (main reason for divorce). He now has 3 darling girls. I'm happy for him because I knew he always wanted kids. I am engaged to a wonderful guy and we've been trying for the past 5 months.  Did the blood work and the numbers were fine.  Started clomid last month and I'm about 2 days late.  I won't take a hpt until I'm at least 7 days late. I don't want to be disappointed again. Insurance doesn't cover IVF and I can't afford it.  I don't think we're too old.  I'm established and has a lot of love to give to a baby.  God has a plan and He knows the desires of my heart. I'm trying to stay positive and not give up.

  • MWilliams, you give me hope.  I am 43 and we have been trying for over a year.  I was trying to get used to the idea that it might not happen for us.  Maybe all hope isn't lost.  I am sending prayers, positive thoughts and lots of sticky baby dust your way.  Let me know who you are doing.

  • Classicoyote, thanks for your support. I really appreciate it.  Don't give up hope.  I have been reading a pregnancy over 40 blog of many women who have gotten pregnant after 40.  God is no respecter of person. What He has done for other, He can also do for you. I will be praying for you and also sending LOTS and LOTS of sticky baby dust your way.  I'm so glad I found someone close to my age who is on the same journey.  Let's keep each other informed.

He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children.  Praise ye the Lord.   Psalms 113:9

    Remember, God hear your prayers.Smile
