I'm addicted to this app: Fooducate

It scans packaged foods and rates them. It helps me pay more attention to what's in pre-packaged foods and hopefully make smarter choices. What's surprising is sometimes the more expensive, organic-type stuff is not always the best. Like chicken nuggets. I bought the Applegate kind for my boys to eat occasionally, and it rated Meijer's store brand better.

I'm loving it, so I thought I'd share.

  • Thanks for sharing!  I added it.  I have been focusing on avoiding high fructose corn syrup lately and I cannot believe what they are adding it to now.  DS1 wanted cereal with raisins at the grocery store and I was fine with that... but I could NOT find one without hfcs added.

ETA: We just went around scanning things in the house and actually threw away a couple things (e.g. Toaster Strudels) based on what we read.  Thanks for posting.

  • Thanks for posting.  I am on a restricted diet and have to spend so much time reading labels in the grocery store...this may help!  I need to look up those chicken nuggets....I buy Applegate farms too!  Darn!!!!

  • Interesting. I've been having fun scanning random things in my pantry/fridge but I have to take their food scores with a grain of salt. My extra virgin olive oil was a C+, but other brands of extra virgin olive oil rated B+ even though they're identical. The kids' whole milk with DHA/Omega 3s added also rated pretty low because of the fat content.

And yeah, I'd still buy the Applegate chicken nuggets over the store brand. There's something to also be said about the source of the meat and this app can't account for that.
