If you pumped and stopped at 1 year...

Did you just stop BF and pumping all together at 1 year, or did you stop pumping and continue to BF?

My dilemma is that I would like to stop pumping at 1 year because I am tired of pumping and I have tons and tons of milk in my deep freezer that I am already sure I will not be able to use, but if Audrey wants to continue to BF I would like to.  But if I stop pumping then there will be times when I will not be pumping or BF for a good 24 hours at a time.

If you continued to BF and not pump, how long was it in between nursing sessions?  I just don't think it is realistic to do nothing for 24 hours and maintain any milk...or could I???

Thanks ladies!

  • I was in your shoes about 6 months ago so I really know how you feel. I was nervous if I stopped pumping I wouldn't be able to keep breastfeeding which is what I wanted. I didn't mind the fact that DD wouldn't be getting bottles while I was gone at work in fact I was hoping to wean off the bottle.

I don't know how/why but it all works out. I stopped pumping (by accident really--started a new job and couldn't find time for 2 days to actually pump) a week after DD's birthday and she is 18 months now and we still nurse at night and mornings and usually in the middle of the night still too....  My supply isn't what is was but it has adjusted pretty well.

So if you really do want to stop pumping go for it when you're ready. It shouldn't  affect your supply too much.

  • I pumped and BF until around 14 months.  At that time, I stopped pumping and just BF at night before bed.  Your supply will adjust over time although you might be uncomfortable at first.

I stopped pumping, but I still BF at night and in the morning. I used my frozen stash for bottles during the day and slowly transitioned to whole milk. Then, around 14 months, DS started to wean himself from me.

     Good luck!
