Can you believe that person is wearing their baby?!?!

C has been wanting held all day for a couple days now and I really needed to go to the grocery. So, I put her in the sling so I could get what I needed to and keep her happy.  And I got stared at the WHOLE TIME I was in the store.  I mean really, would they rather I leave her in the car seat and she scream the whole time?  I guess I'm just a weird hippy for using something as radical as a slingConfused  Can you imagine what they would say if they only knew I was breastfeeding and cloth diapering too?  The HORROR!

  • I get the sideways looks too when I wear DD. Where I'm from, baby wearing is VERY unusual. I can count the number of people on one hand that I have seen wearing a baby in the past 10 years. Everybody would rather lug around a big, bulky car seat. I think they're weird for wanting to carry that car seat everywhere!!

  • Its not normal here either and I should have known I'd get looks.  Now that I think about it, I can't remember ever seeing anyone wearing their baby.  The car seat is such a pain, its so heavy even with LO being only 7 lbs.

  • Haha, if only you went shopping with me at BJ's (a wholesale store) the other day! I was bf'ing as I walked through the store. It's not like my boob was hanging out. I was completely covered. Every time I saw someone look at me the wrong way I just started to laugh and tell DH how immature people can be about bf'ing.

Go you for doing whats best for your child (and everyone around you as well).

I would have to say that I would look at you too, but only in amazement! NIP is NEVER seen around my neck of the woods, and seeing you NIP while walking, now that would impress me!

  • I wore DS to the groccery store the other day in my k'tan and some lady was walking out of the store when we were walking in and she had to run back in to ask me if I had "a baby in there".  I looked at dh after and said um what else would it be a dog.

!  Actually, the first time we took LO out, we went to a super small grocery & nursery store (nursery as in flowers/plants/etc...)  DH wore our son in the K'tan and had his head quite covered to prevent germs & sun exposure.  2-3 people walked right up to my husband and asked to see his puppy!!

I got frustrated sitting in the car, so I wrapped myself up and went walking! :) It's not seen much around here. I am waiting for the day someone actually says something. I am not the best person to p'off :)

  • I went for a short walk with DH and the pups and LO was fussing in her stroller, so I popped her in the sling. She PASSED OUT! So completely content. I was nervous since it was our first time using the sling I kept peeking at her and holding the sling. A few neighbors stared with confusion, I don't think they have seen baby wearing much either.

  • My mother got me a snuggli and I think its amazing! First time I tried it was today and he fell right asleep.. This will definitly come in handy going for walks or shopping since he seems to hate his stroller :(

  • Too funny! I love the looks people give me when I wear either of my girls. I especially love to watch people squirm while I NIP!haha Never thought I'd say that, but baby's got to eat, right?

I see so many people wearing their babies, why is it so strange to some people?

This!  I almost think I get more looks here carrying around the carseat than if I was wearing her.

  • I have a Moby and I LOVE it but, I do get a lot of weird looks. In the mall people would ask if there was a baby in there or if it was a real baby. I got a lot of double takes. Abbey absolutely loves it though, she is out like a light as soon as I put her in it. As long as I am not that person that has the screaming kid in public, I will continue to wear her.

LOL Ditto. I get a lot of looks but mostly in a good way. I live in Hippieville, NY. Babywearing is extremely common here, if not more common than strollers.

ETA: And it is nothing at all to see women NIP, let alone nursing while baby is in a carrier. And cloth diapering is pretty common here too (Jillians Drawers is right in town!)

  • I'm surprised by this thread. I'm from hippieville Portland too but I'm now in the middle of North Dakota so you'd think babywearing would be freakish but I see women with slings all over. And thus assumed that if it was blase *here* it would be common everywhere else as well.
