Food Allergy

Do Allergies and Asthma go hand in hand?

My co-worker seems to think that LO is predisposed to having asthma since he's uber sensitive to A LOT of things. Both food allergies (dairy, egg, peanut) and indoor/outdoor allergies (like dust, mold, pollen etc).

Is there any correlation between allergies and asthma?

Re: Do Allergies and Asthma go hand in hand?

  • Ohio state -buckeyes! whoot whoot!  (my DH went to ohio state)

I was told that your child is automatically asthmatic, but that doesn't mean he will have asthma attacks.

i was at an allergist yesterday with my son and i asked her about my pregnancy and what are the chances of my second baby having allergies and her first response is that my second baby has a higher chance than normal to have food allergies, seasonal allergies or asthma..

Also, if they are reacting to something mildly, they can start wheezing and that may sound like asthma -my son did that last year. he would wheeze all the time and we just though he had asthma but he was reacting to food

DH's family is all from Ohio and are HUGE Buckeye Fans.

I've notice in the past couple weeks (since the humidity has spiked) that when he is running around inside/outside he begins to cough/wheeze until he stops and settles down... at his 18month appointment (in 2 weeks) i had planned to talk to our pedi about going to an allergiest for offical testing.

  • Both are the result of inflammation. We weaned my son off asthma meds and he was once a pretty severe case. Ironically, right after his vax reaction, his asthma disappeared. His doctor believes it was bc we started giving him a lot of vit d. While the asthma is now totally gone, he still has some food sensitivities but they have gotten better as we have tackled his huge inflammation problem.
  • Our allergist has not diagnosed asthma, but has said that DD's numbers indicate that she is at very high risk for it. Plus DH had very severe childhood asthma as a child and still has very bad environmental allergies year round.

  • They're related in terms of predisposition.

As in, I have family history of allergies, eczema and allergies, so my kids are at higher risk.

DD had multiple severe food allergies as an infant, but outgrew them all. She still have eczema, but no signs of asthma. Her reactions were always GI though - never respiratory.

DS has eczema. No other symptoms of anything yet.

  • allergies, asthma and eczema all are correlated.  All have to do with an immune response (or lack of) and inflamation.  And while they're all correlated- you can absolutely have one without the other.  And even the doctors don't seem to know exactly why that happens.  My first son has all 3.  His asthma is even worse due to his prematurity.  My second son already has eczema and will see the allergist at 4 months old.

  • Yes, there is a strong correlation.  Your child might be fine and never develop asthma, or only have mild asthma symptoms during exercise, so no need to worry yet.  Just something to keep in mind once he has PE in school.

(Speaking as someone with multiple food allergies and lots of asthma -- many family members with both as well)

  • Ditto pp's. DD started out with terrible eczema around 4 months. Her allergies were confirmed at 11 months, and at that time we were warned about the eczema-allergy-asthma trifecta. Sure as shoot, diagnosed with asthma at 19 months after several small attacks. :(
One doesn't guarantee the others, but having one raises your risk of developing the others.
  • Sufferer of allergies, OAS, and asthma here. I've always had my OAS and allergies in some form, but they have increased in severity as I got older. My asthma is adult onset. Fortunately at this time I only need an emergency inhaler.

On the flip side of most families here, I am the only one in mine with any of the above. We have zero history of food allergies (or any allergies, really) and asthma. I am the lucky first.
