Which diaper pail is best?

Looking at Diaper Genie vs. Arm&Hammer. Anyone have preferences?

We have a small house so I want less stink and don't plan on keeping dirty diapers in the house for days. Originally registered for the Diaper Dekor (purely for looks hah) but it has bad reviews.

Thanks!

  • Neither honestly. Complete waste of money. Take dirty diapers immediately to the outside garbage can. No matter what diaper pail you get, dirty diapers stink. Throw wet ones in regular garbage. Easy peasy!

I am all about saving money, so this option is interesting. Do you literally walk each diaper outside? Or keep a bag with a few and empty when you go outside?

  • I had a diaper champ with DD and as long as it was emptied everyday it never smelled gross.  I know I do not want to be hauling dirty diapers outside to the garbage can 10 times a day, especially in the winter or when it is raining, but that works for some people.  I would rather just empty the diaper pail once a day.  I don't like the diaper genie because they make you buy those special bags for it.  With the diaper champ you could just use a regular garbage bag.

We take all dirty diapers straight outside to trash.  For the lower level we put the wet ones in the regular trash can. For upstairs where her bedroom is we have a Safety First Diaper Pail.  It takes regular trash bags.  It works out fine for us.

  • I started with a Diaper Genie but then just started walking them out to the garbage if they were dirty. In the first few months, there a lot more diapers so it was handy but not necessary. And yes, they do smell even with the Genie.

Maybe I will skip registering for one since we live in a tiny single-floor home, and then buy one on my own if it drives me crazy walking outside all the time?

  • at first we just used the diaper champ (uses regular trash bags) and emptied once a day.  Once he got older, dirty ones went straight to the trash outside and wet ones just went in regular trash.  so, we were only taking them straight outside once or twice a day.  no big deal.  our kitchen trash goes out about once a day anyways.  we'll do the same for this one.

  • I agree that they are a waste of money.  Poop diapers stink no matter what diaper pail they are in....take the poop diaper to the outside trash asap.  Wet diapers just go in my kitchen garbage or sometimes I hang a plastic shopping bag on the door handle for the wet diapers and dispose of it at the end of the day.  Don't waste the money on a diaper genie!

  • I'm with the PP, they all SUCK!!!  They work megerly when you are using newborn diapers but wipes get stuck, big diapers fill it super fast, refills are expensive and emptying them was a total PITA.

Go get a small trash can with a tight fitting lid and use small bags.  Take the whole can OUTSIDE to empty so you don't release the cloud of stink into you home.  Stick a stick on air nutralizer/freshener on the underside of the lid and keep a box of bakingsoda handy to sprinkle on any super stinky diapers.

  • I just looked in my Baby Bargains book, and the genie gets an A, while the Arm & Hammer only gets a B. Still both good ratings IMO, but I have no input for IRL.
