I know what I want to be (long and rambling)

I know what I want to be when I grow up, I'm just not sure how to get there.  I want to work in some sort of educational programming.  For example, I would love to do programming for a museum or a non profit agency.  I just don't know how to make that transition.  It seems my resume is lacking :(.  I have been a teacher for 6 years in an urban setting.  I also have my masters degree.  I have decided not to return to my teaching position next year for various reasons.  I have applied to several 'ideal' jobs but have not heard back.  In all reality I'm not 100% qualified for these jobs.  Most of them ask for some programming experience.  I have the opportunity to do some programming work at church in the form of VBS and the youth education program.  I'm thinking of working in my mom's law office part time and doing the work at church to build up my resume.  Is this a reasonable idea?  I'm just afraid that if I leave teaching now I will never get back to working with and for kids.

Any thoughts or suggestions?  Anyone have a sweet job they want to give me? :)

  • I don't really have any advice.. other than to keep applying and look for any opportunity you can to add experience to your resume.

I just wanted to offer support and wish you luck in your search.  I'm still not sure what I want to be when I grow up.  I think it's great that you've found your calling!  Keep at it, things will fall into place eventually!

  • A friend of mine did have this job.  She had work experience in early childhood and her degree was in early or elem. education (I don't think she had any formal classroom teaching experience though).  She worked for Heritage Village at Sharon Woods as an ed. coordinator and also at the Cinti Museum Center.  I recommend thinking of places where children typically go for field trips (zoo, museums, nature centers, etc.) and calling them to ask what sort of experience their ed coordinators have.

Something like this might get you close to what you want...  the issue I see is the hours involved, but that's my opinion.  https://www.newportaquarium.com/joinourteam/currentopenings/posting/tabid/199/articleid/11/event-services-coordinator.aspx

fwiw, I had a job similar to what you described in college.  I cooped in the Educational Programs Office at NASA in Cleveland.  They ran all sorts of programs for students, etc...  These jobs do exist, but they are hard to come by and don't necessarily pay a lot.

I found another interesting listing  https://www.cincynature.org/jobs.html

  • Agree that these types of jobs might not have the best hours (read: evenings and weekends!) and not the greatest pay (compared to what a teacher with a masters can earn in the teaching field).  I know my friend that worked at the museum center did a lot of work on the weekends.
