Doesn't like pacifier?

anyone else have a LO who dislikes it?

She will rarely take a pacifier. We still try occasionally if she's fussy and she will maybe 1 out of 10 times take it. We've tried two different kinds. I guess it's not a bad thing. We just don't really have that option to soothe her...

Re: Doesn't like pacifier?

  • Yup DS hates the pacifier about 95% of the time. He has to be super sleepy and fussing and MAYBE he will take it. Last night he was crying out in his sleep, I popped it in and prayed he wouldn't spit it out and he actually took it and fell right back to sleep instantly. I WISH he would do that during the day. And everyone constantly asks me if he takes a pacifier since he is super fussy bc of reflux.

  • DD didn't like hers for a very long time.  She likes it now when she is going to sleep, other than that she doesn't care much for it.
  • my little one hates it....she's like Finley only takes it part of the time and usually launches it across the crib/pack n play/car seat.....

if I get super desperate and know that I have clean hands I'll let her suck on my finger and it soothes her just the same....does Finley like to suck on her own hands?

Yep, I could of wrote this myself

  • I have a 2 yr old who loves his Paci and a 2 month old who could take it or leave it.  I wish she would take it.   It would be nice to have that option to soothe her.

  • My DD#2 has refused to take any kind of pacifier. Sometimes I wish she would take one though because comfort nursing can make me kind of sore if she wants to do it for hours...

I always have her in sleepers that cover her hands or in mittens because she is a mad scratcher but on the occasions they were not covered up she sure did suck her hands. She  has sucked mine too..

  • This isn't necessarily a "bad" thing.  My LO doesn't really love pacifiers either.  She will only take to the Soothie, and even then it's for maybe 5-10 minutes a day.  She greatly prefers to suck on her fingers, and I love that since the fingers are always there for her whenever she would like.

I have far too many friends with babies that suck pacifiers almost 24/7, and they are constantly having to pop them back in because the kid will freak if it falls out.  No thanks.

  • DD # 1 rarely used a pacifier.  DD # 2 has used it a few times but doesn't really seem to like it.  I'm not too concerned - first because I don't want to create nipple confusion and second because I don't want her being a 2 year old still needing a pacifier.  DD soothes when I just hold her close and rock her.

  • My little guy hated it which everyone told me was great.  However, I was determined to make him like one because I didn't want to be a human pacifier.  So, I found out that it was soothies that he doesn't like.  He likes Nuks.  =)

  • I have only successfully got her to take a binkie three times. I can't get her to take it anymore. I tried 5 different kinds, and the Avent ones are the only ones I had any success with.

When I try to put it in her mouth she gags on it! And then I just stop because it makes her so much more fussier.

DD#1 still uses hers at bed time and it was a lifesaver. Luckily, DD#2 is a much better infant, and I don't feel too badly that I can't get her to take it.

  • Like the PPs, most of the time Cate just spitsit right back out. If she's super fussy sometimes she'll take it, but have to be holding her and kind of holding it in.

We have the Nam brand pacis. I think we're going to try the Nuks to see if she likes them better.

DD1 never used a paci, but she's 5.5 and STILL sucks her thumb. We are actualyl getting ready to have an appliance put in her mouth to keep her from thumb sucking.

DD2 used a paci religiously until she was 2y3m old. At that point we ripped the tops off, showed her they were all broken, and she never asked for it again!

IMO, it is MUCH easier to get rid of a paci then having a hand/finger sucker. So we'll keep pushing the paci on Cate & hope it takes!

But how do you get her to stop sucking her fingers/thumb once she is doing it 24/7? I'd rather soothe her with a paci because it can be taken away in a few months or a year.  My sister is having hell trying to get her little boy to stop sucking his thumb.

  • DS hates them. If he is really worked up white noise works. Or I stick his hands in his mouth, he sucks on those just fine. He also loves to swing. I use that as a last resort because I feel like I should help him first, but I can't rock him the same way the swing can and he likes that motion better.

I think you missed the part where our babies won't take paci's anyway. When life gives you lemons...
