awake baby

Everyone tells me to keep the baby awake as much as possible during the day to help with night/day confusion.. but the one thing no one is telling me is how to keep a one month old baby awake?! DS will sleep 3-4 hours blocks from 6/8am until the evening with a one or two good 5 hour blocks in there, and  then from 8pm-6am he only sleeps an hour or two at most and wakes up to feed..

any advice on keeping him awake maybe from noon-8 to possible help with the confusion?!

Re: awake baby

  • Have you tried going out with him during the day for a few hours or so? Our bodies are rigged to understand the sunlight means daytime. Also, try going for a walk an hour before sun down or bed time. The fresh air helps Em sleep a little longer an better.

Also, try to create a bed time routine. For us, Em gets a warm bath. Then we go into her room and she gets a massage with J&J Lavender lotion. She gets a fresh diaper and a nice warm outfit. Next, she will get some cuddle time and a boob to eat. When she gets a few months older I will start to include a book in there to read to her.

Try to keep the room boring. Lights and sounds simulate the brain, aiding in keeping them awake. Place him down the same time every night. I know when I can't sleep, I turn off EVERYTHING (cell phone too!) to sleep. It takes a little bit to fall asleep but it works.

Also, it may not take one day or one week to work. It may take some time or no time at all!

    Good Luck!

  • I have to agree with the advice, it's worked wonders for us with our second baby!

I was greatly unsuccessful with keeping my first awake ever! I tried everything.

My advice is to find friends who have toddlers!haha My 2 year old keeps the baby awake a lot during the day and she sleeps like a dream at night!

If it weren't for having a 2 year old screaming in her face and wanting to hold her all day, she would probably sleep toO!
