Cost of Reproductive Health Specialist vs Magee

We are starting IVF later this year and trying to analyze the costs of going through IVF at RHS versus Magee. (Including analyzing the pros and cons of the shared risk programs offered by RHS and ARC via Magee).   Does anyone have any insight into this?   Unfortunately for us, the financial aspects will have a big impact on our decision where to seek treatment, so if you have any experience or knowledge regarding specific costs at either, I appreciate the feedback.  Thanks!

Re: Cost of Reproductive Health Specialist vs Magee

  • I am not sure about the prices on IVF, but I know that IUI with RHS was about $1400 versus $2800 with Magee. This was all out of pocket. If your insurance covers anything it maybe less (if it were an IUI). Also check to see if your insurance covers the meds. Val is the financial counselor at Magee and provided a worksheet with different options.

  • If you are saving up for IVF, I personally would go to Magee over RHS from personal experience. We have noticed a world of difference in the level of care and expertise.
  • I don't have any info on IVF but I just wanted to say that I do go to Magee for fertility treatments.  I see Dr. Wakim and just started my first IUI.  It was 2100 for the procedure, sperm wash, bloodwork, and all monitoring appointments.  The meds were covered by my insurance.  I do think PP is correct on the 2800 if you an IUI with injectable meds.  I just did clomid with a trigger shot. I am sure if you called the nurse and/or financial planning lady would be able to give you some estimates.  Like PP said, they have typed up worksheets with different procedure costs on them.  Good luck!

  • I am currently going to RHS. I had my first iui last week. Testing on Mon to see if it worked. I am so glad you asked this question. I was also curious about the difference in costs. My dr said I should go straight to IVF using donor eggs because of my age(43). DH and I talked about it and said sure. Well all of it changed when we heard the price..$20,000! Our insurance covers nothing. Maybe meds. Don't think we are doing it now. Very bummed but DH not totally on board with paying that much money and it not working. I heard Magee has some type of shared donor egg program for couples and it lets the couple split the cost. Never looked into it because I didn't want to start all the testing over again. Sigh..

  • It's called "shared cycle". One donor but 2 couples share the eggs as well as part of the costs. Is that what I said above? Omg I can't think today

  • I did my IVF at Magee-the care I received was exceptional.  I saw Dr Wakim-he is amazing.  I paid 9800. That paid for everything but my meds (my insurance picked that up.) At Magee you can pay them directly-I think it was just a bit cheaper than what I paid or you could pay an outside party and for a few hundred more you got one fresh and one frozen cycle (thats what we did).  So, if your fresh cycle failed-you could use your frozen embies at no additional cost-if you paid your 9 whatever thousand to Magee and your fresh cycle failed you would have to pay 2000 your next cycle to use your frozen embies.  I know many couples who have used Magee and have been very pleased.

  • I did IVF at Magee with Dr. Wakim, and definitely suggest going through ARC.  It saves a lot of money.  I don't remember the $ amt, I'll have to look when I get home.  I absolutely loved Magee, the nurses and all of the doctors.
  • When I was deciding between RHS and Magee (Dr. Wakim) in 2009 the pricing was very close - I think Magee/ARC was slightly less expensive but it wasn't enough to really play a factor in deciding between the two.  I chose Magee because I felt very comfortable and reassured by Dr. Wakim.  When I first met with him he poured over my chart for over an hour and developed a personalized plan for me ... and it worked (IVF #1 > DD is now 10 months old).  I found ARC very easy to work with.
  • I just wanted to give an update in case anyone is still wondering about this.  My husband created a massive spreadsheet to analyze the costs of IVF at RHS versus Magee, including the potential to utilize the shared risk program at RHS, and ARC financing at Magee.   Magee was ultimately less expensive....by around $2k, according to him, but I don't know exactly how he came to that number (he's very good at anything relating to finances/numbers).  I think he based his analysis on an anticipated 2 attempts (one fresh, one frozen).   Regardless, Magee made the most sense financially.   I also should mention that one thing we discovered is if you elect to use any insurance coverage, you can't do the shared-risk at RHS.  ARC (at Magee) is restricted also.  Last year we found out that although his company has exactly the same insurance offering as mine (ZERO Coverage), his company offers the opportunity to add a fertility rider to your base plan, which gives a $5k lifetime benefit for treatment/procedures and $5k for drugs.   Because we obviously want to use that benefit, Share-risk (or ARC) doesn't make sense for us.  It makes more sense to pay as you go.   We just had our "IVF orientation at Magee" on Monday, and the cost sheet was provided.   If anyone is interested, I can share. Also,  I'd be happy to share our experiences at either clinic, as I've now been a patient at both, and had interactions with all the docs at RHS, and Sanfillipo at Magee. PM me because I don't get on here very often.
  • Hi.  I went through IVF this year.  I checked into Magee and RHS.  RHS is more expensive, but depending on what you need through IVF.

We went through IUI for a few months without success, so we went to IVF.  After consultation and trial transfer, they determined that I would need ICSI as part of the IVF procedure.  That slapped another 1,000-1,500 to the initial cost.  I believe RHS is close to 15,000 with ICSI and that is only 1 time.  If it doesn't work, you are out.
We opted for a shared plan (I can't remember exactly what they called it, but, if you are eligible and never had IVF before, along with some other eligibility factors, you can get up to 6 egg transfers, (3 frozen, 3 fresh) for around 26,000 with ICSI.  The good thing with this program, is if you don't get pregnant at all, they reimburse you part of your money.  But, if you get pregnant say ON THE 1ST TIME (Like we did), you end up forfitting all of your money, meaning, in my case, I gave them an extra 11,000 for this, but we got what we came for.  My husband is very skeptical about the entire program, and he said, although unethical, that if we would have purchased just the 1 IVF deal, I'm sure they would have found a way for me not be become pregnant so I would have had to pay another 15,000.  With this package deal, they got their money, got us out of there as fast as they could, and got to keep the rest of the money.  Just opinions, but after trying for so long and finding out how people scam people that are in such desperate need for a baby, you can't help but starting to feel that way.

  • Magee's price sheet was about half that -a little less than $10,000 for IVF procedure - not including medication
  • ....with Donor egg its roughly the same cost at Magee..$20,000

  • Hi All,
It looks like this post has been inactive for a while, but I thought I'd give it a shot.  We have been trying for 13 months.  My DH has been advised he is "perfect" by his doctor, so at least there is that.   I have my first appointment with RHS at the end of this month and have no idea what to expect. I've had some blood work and an HSG and all came back normal.  Would you recommend going to both RHS and MaGee?  Of course all of my friends who I have mentioned this to have no experience, it "just happened" for them and we should just try harder.  Nice huh?  Any input would be much appreciated!  I'm looking at the costs on here and they are giving me a bit of heartburn!
  • Old thread, yes, but considering I just completed my first IVF cycle with Magee (and I just got a positive test!), I can't recommend them enough.  I never met with RHS but the quality of care I've received at Magee has been second to none and it is less expensive - including meds (our insurance covered only the HCG I needed), our 1 fresh + 1 frozen through ARC came to about $15,000.

  • randomly stumbling in-

i met with RHS early on (TTC for 6ish months, all testing had been done with my ob/gyn and cleared as unexplained IF). ultimately, i didn't mesh well with them. i knew that we were seeking help pretty early, but we were fine with taking some action. however, RHS refused to do clomid or medication only cycles. they wanted me to go straight to IUI/IVF. those were not procedures that we were against at all, but at 6 months TTC we weren't at that point. i had hoped to do some medicated cycles first to make sure we had tried all avenues leading up to the bigger procedures. since RHS refused, and it made me feel like they were only out for $$$, i never returned. i never ended up having my appt at magee with wakim (long story), i did end up seeing an RE in morgantown that we had immediate success with and was a medicated cycle (femara + trigger shot + progesterone). a year after having my son we went back to that same RE to work towards #2 (which took a bit more work, but was ultimately successful with the same treatment plan). i'm not suggesting you go to WV (though, i did travel from pgh to morgantown the second time because i liked him so much), but i would be prepared to go in to the appt knowing what you are hoping to accomplish and that RHS may or may not be on the same page. magee is a wonderful place to go if RHS doesn't work out. whatever happens-i hope you find what you're looking for!

  • I had great luck with RHS and a friend just switched from Magee to RHS because they were more flexible on treatment and thought more broadly about her care as well as her husbands.    That said I loved Dr. Kubik and didn't like Dr. Erb at all.  My friend loves Dr. Erb, so personality can be an issue.
Excited for our new little one!  Two Angels remain in our prayers.

  • I went to both Magee and RHS and liked RHS better.  Mine was covered by insurance so I couldn't tell you the cost.  But the overall patient experience was better at RHS.  Plus, I hated actually going to Magee and being face to face with all these pregnant women smoking right outside the hospital door when I was struggling with infertility.  It felt cruel.  A friend of mine just had huge success (two successful IVF transfers in a row!) at Cleveland Clinic.  If I needed to do fertility stuff again, I'd definitely keep it in mind.  Their lab is amazing and has a much higher success rate.
