Reflux babies and bedtime question

DD has severe reflux.  Our Pedi GI has prepped us to have the mindset for a long haul, approximately 2 years.  She also suffered from severe gastric pain and had a touch of delayed gastric emptying.  She also could have been colicly but who knows when you have all the above.  The first few months, bedtime was hell.  I would walk/rock/bounce her for an hour or two after her bottle until she fell asleep and then I would wait a bit and finally put her in the crib.  Now, life is a bit easier but recently her sleep has regressed and she has started waking up at night.  I am not sure if this is reflux related or what.  I currently bottle feed, rock, she falls asleep, I keep her in my arms for about 45 mins after bottle and then transfer to crib.

Do you feed, keep your baby up, and then let them put themselves asleep in their crib?  Do you rock to sleep and then transfer?  And if you do put them in crib drowsy but awake do they toss and turn and then spit up from all the movement?

I think I am using the reflux as a reason not to sleep train but I am really not sure if there is a better way then how we are doing it.

    How old is she???

Have you tried the Rock N Play sleeper?? It was literally a lifesaver for us (DS2 had severe reflux also...) and he slept in it until he was 7 months.

What kind of meds is she on? Did you recently make any changes that could be causing the sleep regression?

Have you tried a wedge to prop up her mattress?

Also, I actually found that it was much better if we fed DS2 a bit earlier before he went to bed so that way he had time to digest. Could you move up her last feed a bit so she isn't falling asleep right after you feed?

  • We had to avoid eating right before bed.

We followed the drowsy but awake program from very early on, because that is what worked well for us.

She did have to sleep elevated in a travel swing (approved by our pedi) until her reflux got better with age, and then we put her in her crib, elevated on one end.

  • DD still has reflux at almost 2... We just had to switch her to prevacid and we are hoping she outgrows it soon, but as long as she's properly medicated, there are no real symptoms. When she was an infant, she slept in her swing until about 8 or 9 months old. We actually saw a sleep specialist because her sleep was so bad. She told us that traditional CIO/sleep training often doesn't work for babies with severe reflux because it causes vomiting so she advised against it. We finally got her to sleep in her crib with a wedge to elevate her. It took a long time for her to consistently STTN but that was partly due to ear infections and fluid too... She had a rough 18 months!

  • When was the last time you adjusted your daughter's meds dosage? As baby grows/gains more weight you might need to adjust or switch to something's else.Good luck!
  • DD is 7 months old. We used the rock n play until recently since she is getting so big. Her crib is lifted. We still use the rnp when she is experiencing a hard night. And she is on the max Prevacid for her weight. I wish this was easier lol
