Blood in diaper?

Cal just had a BM.  It was a big, solid one, and after I flushed it down the toilet I noticed a couple of tiny blood streaks on the diaper.  I didn't notice any in the poop itself, but I didn't look either.  The blood was bright red and looked slightly gelatinous.  I assume it had been on the outside of the poop, but I suppose it could have come from his urinary tract too (though I would think if that were the case the whole diaper would be stained red/pink).  He has not be constipated, but he hasn't been drinking as much fluid as I'd like.  Also, I checked for any irritation on the outside of his anus and found none.

What do you think...not cause for concern unless it becomes a trend?

We had that issue when we discovered DS's milk allergy but I think it's a little late for that with Cal. I wouldn't worry unless it happens more. He could just be a little irritated inside where you can't see.

  • If it was a big poo it could have easily caused tiny tears on the inside.  Pretty common, not much you can do except try to make his poo's softer so they're not so large.
  • With his bleeding condition, I'd certainly keep an eye on it...but if it was a big, solid poop, he probably tore a couple of teeny blood vessels inside his rectum.

Not a big deal, but I would keep an eye on it.

Also, if the color of his stool gets to be dark, I'd be more concerned.  Blood IN the stool is a much bigger deal than blood ON the stool.

  • Thanks for the feedback, everyone.  Hadn't even thought about the bleeding disorder playing into it, but I was told that von Willebrand type 1 is not a disorder that tends to cause internal bleeding, so I feel okay about it.  Probably is just a fissure from straining with a hard poop.

Pretty much this.  And I think that red blood is actually a good sign when it comes to poop.  If I remember correctly it means that it was introduced pretty late in the process.  If he was bleeding in his stomach or something it would be brown/black and mixed in, not just on the outside.

Hope it was a one time thing!

Thanks...he had another BM this evening and I saw no sign of blood anywhere.  That seems like a good thing, eh?
