Success after IF

Paying for IVF

I am thinking IVF is going to be in our very near future. I need to look at finance options because we will likely need some help.

What route did you go (family, cc, IVF loan)? Were you happy with the terms?

FWIW~ Insurance currently pays for u/s and labs (including sperm washing) but not IUI. Thus far my meds have a high copay (i.e. $50 ovidrel & progesterone/each/per cycle) and I have no idea if this will be the case for IVF although I feel as it will be. I technically have no IF coverage but due to multiple losses this is part of my diagnostic testing.

Re: Paying for IVF

  • We had no IF coverage at all.

Testing and IUIs and the meds for all that we kept up with paying by skimping on the monthly budget.

As we lacked success we kept having to spend more and more money, until we had to dip into savings, big time.

When that was no longer an option, we ended up having to go the HELOC route for IVF.  ILs did pay for the medication expenses for IVF which were over 5K.

It sucked to wipe out our savings, a big portion of our house equity, and the like, but she was so worth it.

  • Do either of you have a 401k? We were fortunate enough to have great IF benefits the first time around. But for #2 we're thinking about borrowing against my husbands 401k. He'll repay the loan back over a couple years, but he'll get to keep the interest he pays (as opposed to a bank loan)... at least this is how I understand it. He's in a very stable job and has a nice match from his company. He'll still contribute while we repay the loan so I don't think we'll hurt ourselves debtwise or retirement-wise.
After THREE years, our IVF miracle is here!!!

  • We had no coverahe what so ever.  For most of the cycles my wonderful parents have helped us with the costs.  For our 2nd IVF we fianced the cycle through a medical credit line that our RE at the time was using; however the interest rates on these are always high.  I hope you can pull off some coverage because it is a beating trying to figure out the financed!
