Working Moms

does your place of work consider open toed shoes appropriate..

not talking thongs/flip flops..  but strappy heals, open toed wedges or flats.

it's always been a no no in past.. and of course, I work in healthcare so any direct patient contact positions cannot.. but office people here are all about the strappy sandals... I was kind of surprised.  but I don't work in a desk job type environment and it's been a few years since I've switched employers...

okay or no?   does region matter? where are you?

  • completely fine. I work in corporate america and we have a very relaxed dress code. Can wear jeans any day and there are plenty of dressier flip flops (not foam $5 ones). I've even seen shorts a few times. Heck, our CEO wears jeans even (although I'm sure they are designer)

  • I Love our company we have about 65employees and we are in the bicycle indusry so you can come in wearing slacks & dress shoes or come in shorts and running shoes. Usually the guys in the warehouse are the only ones that cannot wear flip flops but hey I can come in my Cathy Jean heals or my Old Navy flip flops Big Smile

  • Technically no and definitely not for people in pt care (hospital). But I see some of the administrative staff do it regularly. Personally, I wear shoes I can use bleach wipes on!

  • Yes, definitely. People at my office even wear flip flops.

  • Not allowed at my work. And I work a desk job. But I work for a large financial company and we are business attire (as in suits/shirt tie everyday). They are pretty conservative.
  • They are as long as we're not going to a community.  I work for a company that manages retirement communities so if I'm in the corporate offices, its ok.  I work in corporate 90% of the time.

While style wise, no one cares (you are allowed to wear sweats), it is a safety issue and shoes are supposed to be closed-toed.  However, many, many people ignore this and wear sandals and flip flops all the time.  It drives my manager nuts.  I had one coworker who would slip his sweaty feet out of his flip flops and plop them on the chair next to him in meetings.  DUDE!  I don't want to see your toes right now!!!!
  • We can wear dress sandals, they just can look like flip flops. On what not to wear they say toes are like cleavage and only a little is appropriate for work, like a peep toe.

  • we have no dress code. I saw someone yesterday in shorts, hawaiian print shirt and birkenstocks. I don't go to that extreme.

  • I work in a kitchen so obviously my shoes have to be covered and protective.

However, I have the very unpopular opinion that feet should be covered. I don't think open shoes are appropriate for anywhere but the beach or your own personal casual time. I don't have some strange anti-foot fetish, but I just don't want to see anyone's feet in a work environment. Many people who wear open shoes, at least that I've seen, don't really take care of their feet. I don't want to see your cracked heels or hammer toes or fungus nail while I'm trying to cash my paycheck or see my doctor. And FWIW, men should never wear open shoes. Ever. LOL

  • I work in financial services and this has become acceptable, as well as bare legs, in the last few years.  I think it looks worse to wear hose and pumps in the middle of summer when there are so many cute shoes out there that are more fashionable.  to me fashionable (not trendy) dress = professional dress.

  • We have a very loose dress code in that we are business casual and they make suggestions as to what is appropriate, but don't specifically state that anything is off limits. That said, things like flip flops and crocks are definitely frowned upon, but people still wear them. I think that strappy sandals, heels, wedges, etc are perfectly acceptable but certainly draw the line and think that if it is something that you would wear to the beach that you shouldn't wear it to the office. We are also no allowed to wear jeans except for Fridays.

  • Peep toe pumps/wedges are okay at my current company, but not strappy sandal type shoes. At my last job, any open toe shoes were ok, as long they were not thongs/flip flops. Both of these jobs have been for very large financial service firms in Northeast Ohio.

  • I think it might be more about the job/field itself than the region.  I'm a scientist, there's people that 'dress up', there's people that wear t-shirts, jeans, and flip flops, and nobody gives it a second thought (other than at conferences, professional presentations, etc.)

  • Yes, we can wear open-toed shoes, and I do.  Flip flops would be pushing it though.

  • Open-toed shoes are fine at my workplace. Even Teva type sandals. I haven't noticed flip flops on anyone but I can't imagine a complaint. There is a formal rule against sneakers imposed by our parent agency but I think that's it.

I'm in a library, though. We're famous for our comfortable-but-ugly footwear.

  • This is fine at my work- business casual dress code, office environment.  We are not supposed to wear flipflops although I did everyday last summer when I was 9months pregnant and noone said anything.

  • we can wear strappy heals, open toe wedges, open toe flats, platforms - any of it, just not flip flops.  the majority of my work shoes are open toe.  this is south florida though - wondering if that makes a difference ?!  and a municipal job - working at City Hall.

  • Some people do, but not at certain levels.  Basically, its the entry level or back office folks.  In my job, it would be verbotten.  (Banking in a very large city- in the wealth division.)
  • No idea if it's a regional thing or if maybe it has to do with the type of business you're in, but open-toe shoes are widely accepted around here. Of course, I work in an office where people wear jeans every day (which I don't think is appropriate but I'm not HR so whatever), so I wouldn't even be surprised to see one of my colleagues come in wearing flip flops one of these days.
