Formula Fed..

How many ounces does your baby eat at a feeding? How often are you feeding? Do you offer more or keep your feedings the same everytime?

We are giving 3 ounces every 3 hours right now and he seems content. But should I be offering more? We just upped it from 2.5 last week. I am so confused with this! Thanks!! :)

Re: Formula Fed..

  • She nurses for 15 minutes on each side and then gets 2 oz of formula every 3 hours during the day and she seems content. (how much is actually getting of BM is up for debate, but it isn't much.) At night she gets 3 oz at 12am and again at 3am.

Her pedi basically said to go by what she is wanting. 2-3 oz is perfectly fine at this point, but if he seems hungry still go up to 3 1/2 - 4oz. He will let you know when he is ready for more! :)

  • DD gets a 4 oz bottle about every 3-4 hours. Typically she'll drink about 3 to 3 1/2 ounces, but there have been occasions when she polishes off the entire bottle and still wants more. If that's the case, I'll make an extra 2 oz. We just go by how she acts.

  • I keep the feedings the same. Sometimes he doesn't finish the bottle, sometimes he gulps it down, is cranky, and needs another ounce.

After several feedings of adding an ounce (and him screaming) we've officially upped his feeding to 4 oz.

When DS was at your LO's age, we were at about 2-3 oz ever 3 hours, then he went 3 oz every 2 hours, then 4 oz every 3 hours.

Just go with the flow...it changes every few weeks.

    This.... Exactly!

  • Baby Boy is at 4.5oz every four hours. I just upped that today from 4oz and I keep the feedings the same throughout the day.

  • We've been increasing very slowly. His appetite still isn't much. And sometimes when he does finish off a new, larger amount, it all comes back up in the next hour. Right now we're at 3.5 oz every 2-3 hours. Can't wait for the every four phase.

At two weeks, he was still having trouble finishing an ounce at a time.

We mix in what breastmilk I manage to pump in order to know the amount.

  • LO nurses for 20-25 minutes, then gets a bottle.  We usually start with 2oz and give her more if she is still hungry and fussy.  The most she has ever taken was 4oz in one setting and probably at least 1oz came back up again, so we'll probably back it off and wait awhile before doing that again.  Right now at just under 9 pounds, the LC said she needs about 1oz per hour to keep gaining, although that will go up as she gets bigger.

  • We are at 3.5-4 oz every 3-4 hours.

Usually in the middle of the night for that feeding she eats a lot less--like 2oz. But during the day and in the evening is fairly consistent. She falls asleep by the 4oz mark and doesn't seem to want more food after that typically, so we are just keeping it for now.

  • At 1 month, DD gets a 4 oz bottle and will drink anywhere between 2 to 4 ozs.  She mainly drinks 3 ozs, but there are occasions where she will drink more or less.
