EBF babies

How often does your little one eat?  My lo has been going anywhere from 4 - 6 hrs between feedings and sleeps through the night (9 hours).  Now we have been trying to use the bottle more and she is fighting it.  I figure she will give in and eat if she is really hungry.  The first day we tried she held out for 6 hours which I thought was kind of long but didn't think much of it.  Well yesterday I fed her at 5:30 p.m. before I had to leave for work.  When I got home at 11 p.m. DH said he tried to feed her but she only had like an once. So I fully expected her to wake up in the middle of the night for a feeding.  Well much to my surprise she slept until 6 a.m.  Although I could actually hear her stomach growling in the morning.  I just don't know if she is really not hungry or is she just being that stubborn?!?!  Is this normal for her to be going this long between feedings?  She has always fought the bottle but we would like to get her more comfortable with it.  We have tried several different bottles and are currently using the playtex ventaire bottle.

Re: EBF babies

  • DD goes 3-4 hours between feeds. I wouldn't dream of having her go more that 4 hours (unless she is midnap or something) until she is much older.  I would have serious supply issues if she went that long.

She would wake through the night if she was hungry enough, so I wouldn't worry about that.  About taking a bottle during the day, I would try a few different bottles to see which one she takes better.

  • DS usually eats 8 times a day. He's not even close to STTN, he wakes atleast twice.

  • Jessica eats every 1-3 hours during the day and might wake up 1-3 times at night.

  • DD goes 3-4 hrs during the day and usually gives a stretch of 4-6 followed by 3-4 during the night.  We were doing 2-3 bottles a week while out and about, but haven't been out as much lately so she has now decided she'll hold out for the me and is rejecting bottles.  I had DH try to give her a bottle last night and she screamed and cried and only took about an ounce, then I took her and made her finish the bottle (only 2 more ounces) before I would give her breast to comfort and finish eating.  I'm trying to get her ready for our trip in a week where we'll be out a lot seeing my friends and family that haven't met her yet (don't NIP yet but may have to if she keeps rejecting bottles).
  • DD will go 2-4 hrs during the day and 7-8 overnight. woke up at 3 last night and was hungry but think she is hitting the 3 month growth spurt. We have never had a problem with her switching between breast and bottle. She takes 3 bottles/day during the week at sitters. Not sure how long they could go in between before getting concerned.

This is us exactly!  But as long as LO is growing and gaining weight, I wouldn't really worry about how long between feedings.

ETA:  Forgot to comment about the bottles~ we started DH feeding a bottle at 4 weeks and have done that at least once per week since then.  We had to try 5 different bottles before finding one that worked for us, so maybe try a different kind?  And at first, I couldn't be in the room or DS wouldn't take it.  Now he does great with them since I'm back at work.

This is us!  He is having sime bottle issues too now though.  Like your LO, Jamie is only good with the bottle if he is really hungry.

  • DS goes 5-7 hours once during the night (unfortunately, this is 8-3) after 3, he'll eat every 2-4 hours.  I usually try to offer around 3 hours if he hasn't eaten.  He never eats unless he's hungry because he has refused, but a lot of the time, I want to offer before we leave the house to go run errands. He will take bottles on the weekends if we're out and about, especially now that it's pool season.  I find it more convenient to feed him from a bottle in a setting like that.

  • On average, every 2-4 hours.

Morning with me (3AM-ish to 9AM) every 2.5 hours

    9am-5pm every 3-5 hours

    5pm-8pm he eats 2 or 3 times

Sleeps usually from 8pm until at least 3:30 or 4:30am most nights.

  • Oh yeah! And bottles - Ben only takes the Mam anti-colic bottles. We tried breastflow, tommee tippee, nuk, avent, and a few others. He still will not take anything else...put the wrong nipple on the bottle for a trip out one day...that was fun.

If it isn't a bottle that will work for your daughter, she may not take it no matter how hungry she is. Keep trying different kinds until one works.  If she likes a certain pacifier, she may do best with a bottle that has a similar nipple.

  • My LO eats 6-7x a day so about every 2-3 hours and averages 9-10 hours of sleep a night. He's never gone more than 4 hours without eating while he's been awake--he definitely knows when he's hungry!

Does your LO have enough wet/soiled diapers per day? I have read that it's normal for babies not to eat as much when they're teething sooo maybe that's it?
