? Re: alcohol consumption and TTC

I was just reading on one of the other boards and most were stating their docs had advised them not to consume any alcohol. I understand the point...but at the same time, who knows if I can even get pregnant and how long it will take?? I think of how many people get pregnant from drunken one night stands and go on to have perfectly healthy babies. For the record, I am not a heavy drinker, just socially and maybe some wine on the weekends. This is just our first cycle, so I am hoping for opinions or feedback from some of you ladies on the topic. Thanks!

  • I have to say that it was torturous not drinking for 9 months.  God wouldn't want me to deprive myself before that.  Not my God anyhow.

  • Drink till it is pink is my moto! I can't imagine giving it up to ttc if we didn't have problems. Now if an RE suggests to not drink due to medications that is a whole diffrent ball game. But it doesn't sound like that is what is going on here at all.

  • I gave it up occassionally while we were TTC, but it took us forever and a day to get pg (3 years!) and when it did eventually happen I had wine every single day the whole week of possible conception.

  • I'm with the drink till it's pink crowd too.  Ironically the first two pregnancies I found out I was pregnant after a party weekend.  (And I'm not a big drinker, lol.)

I have definitely cut back on drinking, and am not drinking as much at a time as I was before we started TTC. My doctor hasn't said anything about cutting out alcohol. The one problem I have had is that, when charting, drinking alcohol makes your temp go up and that has thrown my chart off a bit. But, I have made a note on my chart if I've had a drink the night before. I think as long as you aren't getting "naked wasted" (Real Housewives of OC, anyone? haha) then you should be fine!

FWIW-The first two rounds of IF meds I did, I did not drink at all during the 2 ww. The next 2 rounds, I maybe had a drink (either a Friday or Saturday). This round, I will have a beer tonight with my dinner.

    GL!

  • I agree with others on drink till it's pink. I drank about a week before my bfp and R is fine. It sucked enough going without alcohol for nine months.

    DD2: February 2014

  • I think unless your doctor says otherwise it's fine. I had a few beers the day I found out I was pg with DS (before of course). I had a couple the night we concieved this one too. It seems like everytime I start to enjoy beer, I get knocked up! Bottoms up!!!    *sigh* I miss beer.

  • If there is no reason to suspect that you will have a problem with TTC I don't see a reason to change much about your lifestyle.  I have a friend who made her DH give up alcohol, she gave up alcohol, caffeine, etc and it still took them awhile  to conceive - not to the point of being considered trouble but it was stressful for them because of the stringent lifestyle.  DS was conceived around a holiday where I drank quite a bit (not normally a heavy drinker) and DD was conceived right around the most caffeine fueled stressful weeks I've ever had, lol.

  • Even with trouble trying I would drink while trying...If anything I might stop 5 days before testing date..but even that would be fairly extreme I think

  • I was actually drunk when I tested positive with DS (a very welcome - but huge - surprise). It was Christmas Day and we had hosted a kickass dinner and well.... :)

With DD it took a couple years and a year of IF treatments and my OB and RE both said alcohol was not a concern. So I didn't concern myself with not drinking. LOL.

Amen to this.  I drank when TTC both times, but not like my olden days of blacking out several times a week when I was in my 20s.

ETA: I was drinking beer when I tested positive this time  - I took 1 last chug and dumped it out, then called DH who was out.

  • I agree, drink till it's pink! I've gotten PG while abstaining. I've gotten PG after having had a lot to drink in the previous month. Unless your doctor says otherwise, go for it.

I don't usually drink much anyway, but I didn't drink in the two week wait.
  • We weren't ttc when I did and so I had actually drank a few times in the two-three week period when I didn't know I was preggo. I also was taking ambien because working graveyard shift killed me. Anyhow, I was super worried when I found out I was expecting but the doc assured me the baby was likely fine, and so far no complications to note. I'm sure he wouldn't have recommended drinking but I think overall there is much worse that people do and their kids turn out fine. Just my opinion :)

  • late to the game but i was definitely a part of the 'drink til its pink' crowd .. the only reason why i'd stop is if there was a medical reason for me to stop while i was ttc.
