? regarding Ikea dressers and opinions on these pieces...

We have an Ikea Hemnes dresser for Ethan's room.  When we purchased it, I wasn't thinking so much about long term investment.  I know quite a few of you have this dresser or other Ikea furniture.  What are your thoughts regarding longevity?  We're trying to decide what to get for Isabella.  I LOVE the drawers and amount of storage in the Hemnes dresser... would it be more worth it to get another, or to get a solid wood with dove tailed drawers for a little over double the price?

Here are the two cribs we are considering:

    I like both.

For dh and I, neither of us wanted to spend a lot of money on furniture for DS.  Kids are tough on furniture, and the image that always comes back to me is how many of my friends put stickers on their furniture when I was growing up.  If I had spent a good chunk of change on a dresser and my child put stickers on it, I would be furious.  But, if I didn't spend as much I probably wouldn't be as angry.  So for us, we'd probably get the IKEA one... as long as it's sturdy enough and the drawers stay together reasonably well, why spend more?  If I was buying furniture for an adult, I'd get the nicer looking one.  Does that make sense?

  • I like both dressers.  How important is matching to you?  The first dresser matches the cribs really well.  I come from a family of mis-matched furniture so it wouldn't really bother me to get the second one.  I've never bought myself or my kids a bedroom suite.  I've always just used what has been handed down over the generations.  One day I hope to be a grown up with new, matching furniture Stick out tongue

Yes, this is exactly why we didn't go over-the-top with Charlie's furniture. We ended up in the middle - between IKEA and "real, quality stuff" - only because we got the convertible crib and wanted to have a dresser that went with it well. We may end up using it in a room other than his at some point, too.

IKEA won't last forever, but my sister and I had IKEA bunkbeds that lasted a good 8+ years.

  • I've generally been happy with the quality of Ikea furniture, but we have had some issues with it. We own two Ikea dressers and we found that if we had too many things packed into one drawer (our fault), the rail bent enough that the sliding drawers don't slide as easily. On the other hand, we have an Ikea bed that we have taken apart and put back together at least five times and it's in great shape. So I think it just depends. We also have a ton-- at least six-- of Ikea bookcases in various shapes and sizes and those are also in great shape. So it just depends.

  • We selected the Hemnes (white) for Katherine's room because of the classic lines, the huge drawers, and the fact that she can beat up on the furniture and it will keep on going. We intend to buy her "grown up" furniture somewhere during middle school when she won't be beating the crap out of it.

If you're asking for advice, I would go with the IKEA because kids are tough on furniture and the IKEA stuff can take a beating and you won't be upset that expensive, high quality furniture is getting beaten up. Save the high quality furniture for when the kids are old enough to treat it well.

  • I love the IKEA hemnes dresser.  I have it in white in my girls' room and the one you have pictured (along with the rest of that collection) in my bedroom.  That being said, it matches the rest of our furniture nicely and I'm not so sure I like the look of it with the cribs you're considering.  I think hemnes has a really laid back beachy cottage-y feel and both of those cribs look really fancy to me (lol... not sure if any of this makes sense).  I also think the drawer pulls match the other dresser better.  If you don't think you'll use the nursery dresser beyond a few years, I'd probably go with the cheaper option, but as far as looks I like the one that actually goes with the cribs.

As far as longevity, when we purchased our hemnes bedroom set, we had it in mind that we would purchase something for longevity in a few more years and that our hemnes set would someday be guestroom furniture.  For the girls' dresser, it was the same situation.  I was re-doing their room to include a toddler bed for Ava, C's crib, as well as all of the other stuff they have in there so I just needed something that would fit in the room.  I wasn't too concerned with anything but keeping the price down at that point.  I plan to invest more into their bedroom furniture when we redo their room the next time around (which will be when C is also ready for a big girl bed).

This is our plan for Ava's nursery furniture.  It converts all the way to a full size bed, but it was cheaper for us to get some IKEA stuff than to get the conversion rails and a matching crib for Charlotte, and besides that is just too nice for a 3 year old who may want to do a little decorating.  Currently it's just not being used.  It may make a nice bedroom set for her when she is a tween up until the time she moves out Crying
