New to The Bump

New to The Bump, TTC, and question about prenatal vitamins

Hello Ladies!

I am a 29 year old elementary school teacher, and I have been a member of theknot, thenest, and now thebump! I have browsed thebump with wishful thinking for the last 2 years or so, and now, my husband and I (married 4 years on June 9) are officially trying to conceive (been off the pill for 3 cycles, officially trying this month).  I wasn't sure if I needed to be in the Trying to Get Pregnant room, but I thought I'd start here.  Anyway, I am very excited to join you here, and I am hoping to learn some new information here!

I have a question about prenatal vitamins.  I have read in several places that people trying to conceive should be taking them prior to getting pregnant.  I take the One a Day for women that has 400 mcg. of folic acid anyway (have for years).  Is this enough for now since I'm not even pregnant yet?  Or, should I go ahead and do the completely prenatal thing (800 mcg along with all the other supplements in a prenatal vitamin)?

Also, several friends have told me that you can take 2 Flinstone vitamins, and that is equal to a prenatal vitamin.  Do you know if this is true?  I see that 2 have the same amount of folic acid, but do they have the other things needed in a prenatal vitamin?  I want to avoid anything potentially dangerous to an unborn baby and myself, so I want to be sure before I go out and buy something new.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read my post, ladies!  Enjoy your day!

  • Hi and welcome.

Browse the boards and see where you think you're most comfortable. Lurk for a while before posting and have fun!

Try not to stress too much about PNVs. They're just vitamins. Taking one over the other isn't going to be better or worse for a baby. I'd consult with your dr as to whether the One a Day or Flintstones will do it. If not, you can always finish off the bottle you have and get something generic (I took the Target brand).

  • My OBGYN wants me to take 800 mcg of folic acid in the months leading up to TTC, and when we start actively TTC to take 1 mg - 1200 mcg; basically a prenatal vite in the am and a separate 400 mcg folic acid in the evening. I don't know what your ob will say, that's just what mine recommends.

FertilityFriend.com has been an eye-opener for me, and will hopefully make TTC smoother for us. I would encourage you to check it out and read the tutorials, it's free and very helpful. I also enjoyed reading TCOYF, but not everyone enjoys it.

    GL with TTC!

  • H! We were married for 5 months (a bit shorter than you! :) ) and we/I decided to go off the pill and get on prenatal vitamins in the off chance that I may get pregnant. I also used the women's one day prental and my ob said that is perfectly sufficient until you actually get pregnant. Two months later, BAM! I got pregnant. I contacted my OB and she DID immediately write me a prescription for prental vitamins with higher nutrition content. In a nutshell, you're doing the perfectly right thing and when you get preggie, contact your ob! Good luck!!

  • P.S. Do NOT take Nature's Bounty prental vitamins. They're said to have titanium dioxide which is found in whitening gels and kitty litter! Ew.

  • Welcome to The Bump. Sounds like you and I are in the same boat! I just asked my doctor the same question. His response was that there was no harm in taking the prenatal vitamins prior to pregnancy. They will have 800 mcg of folic acid which is safe as long as you take as directed.

  • i'd definitely check with your doc to be safe, because depending on your health it could be more. i'm taking 4mg a day TTC because i have poor absorption... 10 pills a day because i bought the wrong dosage! lol. either way, good luck! :)

  • WELCOME! I take flinstone vitamins =) but I can't say that it should replace pre natals. Target has a really inexpensive pre natal that alot of ppl have taken, no need to get an RX from your doc. GL in your journey =)

  • I am taking the one a day women's vitamin and an extra folic acid 400 mg pill.  I was going to the get prenatal vitamins but I thought my husband my pee his pants since were not actually starting ttc until late july/ august.

    Welcome!

  • I am doing the exact same thing as you now!  I decided against the acutal "prenatal" vitamins until my doctor actually tells me to take them.  For now, it's One a Day for Women and the extra 400 mg pill of folic acid.  My husband already thinks I'm "obsessed" about getting pregnant, so I think he's also pee his pants if he saw prenatal vitamins.  Wink
