Pregnant after a Loss

Just scheduled an elective u/s - am I being stupid?

My a/s is on June 27th, and on a whim I just called the elective u/s place and scheduled a gender determination for Monday.  It's $99, which really isn't a problem, but on the other hand it just seems so dumb and frivolous to spend the money just to find out the sex two weeks sooner.

My thinking was that it sounds like people truly get to enjoy the elective u/s, rather than worrying about everything looking okay.  I really want that happy experience.  Should I cancel the appointment or just go for it and enjoy?

I did it and it was the best ultrasound experience so far. We went to BBB afterwards and got him a little present. :) I say do it! Two weeks is a lifetime in PgAL!

  • Food for thought: Not sure how your budget is, but what will you have for u/s after the a/s?

I know for me if all was perfect that there wouldn't be another one from 20 weeks to D-Day.  Personally, I'd have opted to do one around 27-30w to spread things out a little.  Not an issue for us as we can't afford an elective u/s and things didn't end up being perfect (a/s scan was at 17.5w due to a scare and docs want a growth scan around 30w).

Is there a reason in particular you'd need to know a couple weeks sooner?  Just asking bc there was a lady, I think on the Oct board, who did an elective u/s so her DH could be with her when they found out.  He was set to deploy just before their a/s.

    Both really good points!

There is no reason in particular I want to do it earlier- I'm actually not THAT anxious to find out the sex, to tell the truth.  What I do want is to find out the sex in a happy environment, rather than at the hospital's perinatal unit where they are checking for abnormalities.

We'll probably want to do another elective at some point between the a/s and delivery.  Our budget will allow for that, and they'll give us a discount since it'll be our second elective scan.

I think she brought up some good points as did you.  Why don't you just to an elective one now and then another one sometime after the a/s if you want another looksie at your LO and don't have another u/s coming?  Seems the best of both worlds.  You get to enjoy some time watching your LO and also get to have it in a relaxing environment.

  • We did an elective (not for gender determination since we are team green) because my a/s will be during the day and DH's office moved so he would have to take a half day to go with me.  For the cost it was worth being able to share that with him.

It was wonderful and we will do it with every pregnancy.  There was no pressure, no trying to get the baby to move to get measurements... we just watched LO do some flips and exercises and wave and laugh with the tech.  We got to spend time together watching our baby for fun without any worries.  DH still loves talking about this and sharing his baby's "pictures" with everyone.

  • I didn't do it before waiting to find out the gender, but I have one scheduled in a couple weeks since my OB doesn't plan on giving me any more u/s unless something is wrong.  I couldn't stand the thought of going 20w without seeing her again!

I did it and loved it! It was such a great experience, and so nice to just enjoy seeing the baby without being in a medical setting. The place definitely had a spa feel, and the room was cozy with leather couches for DH and a huge screen. The tech was amazing. It was so much more than I expected. Definitely recommend!
