XP: Baby refusing breast!

I just started back to work 2 weeks ago and am pumping so DD gets 3 bottles during the day.

I used to nurse her when I get home (5:30), before she went to sleep (8:00) and again before I went to sleep (11:00), but lately she's refusing the breast. I kept trying all last night and finally had to pump and have DH give her a bottle because she was in hysterics. Any suggestions on what to do? I'm afraid if I don't nurse her when i'm home, my not so good supply is just going to get worse. Please help!

ETA: She nurses perfectly fine in the morning and before I leave for work so that helps a bit..but nothing in the evenings!!

  • You could try using a nipple shield, my boys did well with that when transitioning from a bottle to breast because it feels more like a bottle to them.  Now I have different nipples for my bottles and they don't need the shields.

  • It's probably because it's easier to eat from a bottle than the breast- it's less work.  If you give your LO a bottle, pump right before/after.  As long as you pump when your baby would normally eat, it shouldn't affect your supply.  You can also try supplements and cookies to help your supply.

This could definitely be the reason. With the bottle the food just pours right into their mouths, and with the breast they have to work at it. She's probably tired at the end of the day, and just doesn't want to work to eat.

  • Keep trying she'll grow out of it/ get back to normal. Maybe make sure she's nice and calm before you try and spend a day on the weekend just hanging out in bed nursing/snuggling/relaxing all day.

  • I have the absolute opposite problem, my DS will NOT take a bottle hardly AT ALL, maybe an oz if we're lucky.  Must get this fixed by fall when I return to work :(  I feel your pain...
  • I agree with pp about the laziness. You can also check out kellymom about nursing strikes. If I'm around ds will not take a bottle but if I'm not home he will. We don't always warm the bottle completely so he likes it fresh.

  • Thanks ladies...she seems to be doing better lately. Fingers crossed she decides she still likes to nurse!
