birthday at school ?

DS goes to school three half days a week.  His birthday falls on one of the days he normally goes to school.  I planned to have him skip that day for a family day which is what we normally do on his birthday.

The next school day is the day after the 4th of July.

I'm trying to decide IF I should try to do some birthday thing at school or skip it. And if so, when?  Any tips?

Re: birthday at school ?

  • My daughter's birthday is on Veteran's day so the school is closed on that day.  I always send treats and celebrate it the day after.

  • The look on J's face when I took cupcakes and bubbles to share w/his friends for his birthday last year convinced me that I will always, always send treats to share on his birthday.  It makes me sad I probably won't get to be there to celebrate w/them this year b/c of work but I know he'll love it.  Everyone makes such a fuss, sings "happy birthday," etc.  He was in absolute heaven.  I say do it either before or after his birthday -It'll make him feel like a celebrity!  :)
  • G's birthday is in July and on the last day of the regular school year they celebrate all of the summer birthdays. It's really fun and everyone loves treats. This year I sent a gift baggie with bubbles and a maraca inside.

    DO IT!

BTW, DH is alllllways gone on G's birthday, so we celebrate either before DH leaves or after. Then also day off and then whenever we have his party. Nothing wrong with keeping the celebration going!

  • Totally celebrate his birthday at school!  The specific day doesn't matter - whatever works best for your schedule - day of, week before, weeks after - whatever.  School birthdays are special too!

Sending treats is not something anyone does at Ryan and Aaron's school.  They have a special birthday tradition for kids to participate in if the parent chooses (it's a song and a story about their child's life thus far -- it's really sweet).  We do that whether it's on their birthday directly or just near it.
  • This is all so new to me.  My birthday always landed during school vacation. ;)

Though I found my preschool yearbooks and there is a photo of me and another kid celebrating our birthday together at school with cupcakes.

DS's classmates definitely "do" birthdays as he's come home a goody bag, had cupcakes after lunch on more than one occassion.

I'll have to ask his teachers what they prefer. Bubbles would be so fun.

This is what they do at Andrew's new preschool also and she also makes sweet little home made organic sweet muffins ( not quite a cupcake but not quite a muffin either).  She actually asks that we not bring anything (food related).

My birthday always fell around veterans day and sometimes that meant we were out of school and sometimes not.  I remember feeling so sorry for kids that had summer birthdays, lol.  That said, I'm not big into making a huge deal at this point so I voted for nothing if he's not at school that day.

  • Check with your school to make sure they don't have a bday treats policy. Ours does sugary treats only once a month, and reserves the last Fri to celebrate the bdays of kids of that month

As a teacher, I always hugely appreciated it when parents asked what they could bring for birthdays.  I always asked them NOT to bring treats, and instead to choose bubbles, pencils, stickers, goody bags without candy, etc.  The kids were just as happy and it meant I didn't have to deal with cupcake crumbs all over my classroom and 20 kids on a sugar high!  :)

    Just my (unsolicited) 2 cents!

  • I'd send treats whenever he'll be at school before his birthday.
